I wanted to ask how much PH affects cories. The reason I ask is that I live in a hard water area at pH 8 and wonder if I need to address this issue. We have a RO unit which can enable me to bring the ph down but always read it is better to have stable readings rather than try to mess with them?

Yes you're right in saying that it is better to have a stable ph rather than a fluctuating ph,all fish can get stressed through the ph changing constantly.
I read that injecting co2 bubbles into the tank can lower ph,but again it needs to be consistant.

My ph is 8,and i'd rather leave it at that, than messing around with it,especially with the cories,i don't know why mine is high, has the local lfs ph is only 7.6?? depends on the water supply i suppose..

All our local LFS are 8 as well, some of the cories (pygmies in particular) being bred in this water as well. So unless otherwise contradicted will keep to this for now..

If your buying fish that are already been kept in the same PH or even bred in that PH then i would leave well alone. You may have trouble if you tried to acquire from other places or wild caught species but for now it seems better for you to have a stable PH rather than a bouncing one.

Adding additional natural things like bogwood should drop the PH but weather it drops it to your desired level is anybodies guess.

Thanks FishyJake just what I thought :good: Do try to get locally and if possible off breeders but not always that easy..

my water is medium/hard and pH 8 and my corys breed in it so it cant be too bad :good: just keep it clean! (which i dont doubt you do.......) ;)

 Thanks mattlee, the only bits that can get about is bits of plant and im forever vengefully taking them out :grr: But do try!
