Hey, I was just wondering, are they're any peaceful african cichlids that stay small, are not extremely aggressive, come in many colors and hybridize with eachother, similar to assorted african cichlids such as elctric yellows, red zebras, johannis and etc

Why do you want them to make hybrids? The fry could have birth defects. It is not a good idea. Why do you want fish that are hybrids, because that is what assorted Africans usually are.

Making hybrids is usually frowned upon in fish keeping. Juat because there are hybrids on the market does not make it right. Think about the parrot fish. They can not close their mouth, this is so because they are hybrids. It is a deformatie. Just think of the other worse deformaties that can come about when making hybrids.

I never said I agreed with it :p just said it was his choice.

BTW I hate parrots but plenty people love them. *shrugs* No counting for taste in some people.

Yeah I hate parrots too. Yeah it is his choice, but it is not a good thing to do. I would strongly advise against it. I just can't figure out why he wants hybrids.

Maybe he doesn't want hybrids, just fish that will breed with other species. Leave the fry in the tank they will probably end up as food anyway.

But why would he want them to breed with other species?

HE is here :p

Hybrids among the same genre of a fish rarely have any deformities, such as if someone was to cross a whole bunch of different Aulonocara's. That's pretty much how all new colors of fish are made. By doing this you are simply expanding the sifferent kinds of fish in the world, note that many types of Aulonocara's live in the same territory so crosses would have most likely happened in the wild. Even species that are declared their own species now were once considered a hybridization, that had no deformities.

It is frowned upon. I would not reccomend it. And a lot of fish that are hybrids do not have a scientific name, well, because they are not found in the wild, and are hybrids. Steel Blue Apistogramma is an example of this. It is just about the hardest thing to find a female of one of these. I believe because they are hybrids. You try to bing Steel Blue Apistogramma and see how much information you will find, not much. Please don't take the hybrid route. Also if you are "just introducing new fish" then releasing fish and plants into the wild would not be so much of a threat. And would not mess up the ecosystem.

Sorry to rain on your parade.

1) Hybrids are found in the wild of all sorts of animals. They just recently found a hybrid polar bear/grizzly bear up in greenland. For years they thought the grizzly would kill off the polar females because there was such hyper aggression between the two species when they met at the boundaries of both their terrorities. But then it turns out bears like it rough.

2)Also just because a scientific name has not been attached does not mean it not found in the wild. There are some fish caught in the wild and sold on the market which yet to have scientific names attached or even be described.

3) I'm unsure what you mean by

If he does this with hybrids of any fish or plants not endemic to his local habit. He will either be dooming them to death OR damaging his local ecosystem by introducing species with no natural enemies he could be encouraging a population explosion of the released species. Bit like when rabbits got accidently introduce to Australia and they ended up being over run by millions of them.

Edit: Forgot to mention this would cause doom for local species as they then will be up against new competition/or out competed for local resources by the new alien species.

Am i the only one thats guna make a suggestion
i keep many psuedos and they keep small ... more agressive than labs but compared to others....

Thank's GGriffin for the long educated answer. I was actually just recently looking up Groler bears on my PC, about how the only live specimen was shot by a hunter. And I will look at the Psuedo's, I am currently looking at Pseudotropheus williamsi. Does anyone here know any single Color South/central American Cichlids That Don't surpass 6-8"?
