All right I have a stock market project in school,Basically we have to pick a stock and follow it. Any good Pets Stores have stock?

If they do could you give me the abrivations of them. I only know Pet Co has it

Thanks :)

Petsmart Co also trades on NASDAQ as PETM.

I've looked up Tetra, Hagen, and All-Glass...they don't appear to be US publically traded companies.

EDIT: 1-800-PetMeds.com trades on NASDAQ too as PETS.

No we pick a company we like, and we follow the stock's ups,and downs, and the person who gets the most money from the chosen stock, gets a full size candy bar from my Math teacher

Thanks man! :) Half of my Math class is doing Nintendo :p
Welcome!

You might check out the yahoo.com financial page to see how those companies have done in the recent past and if they have any prospects for the immediate future that might affect their performance over the next few weeks.

Good luck and keep us posted!

What's the timeframe? I could probably give you a candybar-worthy one.
What rosey fiscal future do you fortell, end? I've no clue.

These stock picking contests just don't make sense to me. Why are we engaging the children we're educating in an act that is effectively guessing. If anyone could consistant pic the best stock, they would be... well, extraordinarily rare. Why don't we teach kids how to pick investments with a more useful longterm approach?

Anyway... I babble...

But I'll GUESS this: Nothing fish related is likely to win Drac that candy bar.

;)

Well, I have some wealthy traders/investors as my 'mentors' :). There's a plethora of psychological factors that cause most people to fail in the stock market. You can do pretty well just by anticipating when the masses are going to gorge themselves and when they're going to panic.

But yeah, I doubt they teach that stuff in school anywhere, not that I know how they could even go about it. I mean, even in my friend's college economics classes he has professors (pointedly un-wealthy professors) touting the efficient market theory as fact.

Man oh man is this off-topic.

I'm going to stop typing now. :)

Interesting points, modernhamlet!

I have to disagree with you on one point though. I think an early education into the principles of wise investing is fruitful. The stock market over time and with judicious selection of proven stocks demonstrates that it is one of the best long-term investments, and can outperform real estate and savings interest. By selecting the right companies and a diversity of stocks you can do well for yourself!

I have to agree with you though that I'm not sure if this contest is set-up in the most educational way possible. I'm wondering if setting up a simulation where you followed a group of fictional stocks over a 5- or 10- year time period (during a month long course, for instance), with pretend news events and company transactions would be a better teaching experience in terms of demonstrating that a gambling buy-and-sell mentality ultimately fails in the stock market whereas a longer term approach pays nice dividends.

Oh dear, I believe I may be hijacking this thread. I'm sorry! Back to fish now...

Thanks Guys, and If anyone had Candy Bar winning stock ideas please send me a PM.

I was also considering Best Buy.
