I just bought a rena xp3 filter and at the very top under the lid is a little bit of air that I can see through the plastic body. Is it supposed to be like that? I do hear a very occasional air bubble go through the impeller. Both the intake and output tubes are 100% filled with water.

By the way.... never and I mean never hook up the intake to the output side of a canister filter. It took me forever to remove the lines from those barbed fittings. Can't believe I didn't break something. Also embarrasing that my 12 year old son had to point it out to me. Oh well, it seems to be okay now.

One last thing... now that I have the canister filter what benefit will I see? Lower nitrate? Less fish waste at the bottom of the tank? Clearer water? Less algae? There has to be some reason I juts spent all that money and the agravation to set it up.  :look:

Doh... the mods moved me to hardware section... I've been banished.

My xp3 is not quite enought for my US90 g tank. And it has caused me headaches for a while.

Your volume of water filtered per hour is the main factor, so I need the volume/size of your tank.

The air at the top of the filter is an air lock. You should get rid of it.

1) Turn off the filter (unplug it)

2) then open ONE and only one of the four latches on it - the air will now begin to escape. It should take a few seconds then you will see water slowly comming out (slightly more than drops)

3) then close the ONE latch that you opened and the air lock will be gone.

There is no reason to spill any water to vent a Rena filter. I connect a completely empty filter to the hoses after a cleaning and open the valves on it. A minute later I plug it in because it has filled all that it needs to. If there is a bubble remaining in the filter that is causing noise, tilt the filter canister at a number of different angles so that the bubbles can get out of the filter and into the return hose. When you get some bubbles out, they will make a funny squirting kind of sound as they go through the spray bar holes.
