Im still learning about these loaches. Is it normal for them to hide all the time? The only time I see them is when I put frozen blood worms in the tank and they zoom out to get some and then go back to hiding. I have lots of hiding places. One side of the tank has rocks/caves and the other side has a lot of fake plants and a big piece of fake bog wood with lots of holes to hide in. I have 7 of them in the tank right now and have had them for a while now. Are there any other loaches I could get that might make them come out more? Any suggestions? All water stats are good.

Thanks for the help in advance

Hi Barracuda

I can only really speak from my own experience but I have found that the smaller the tank the more they will hide. My Kubotai and Darios hid quite a bit while they were temporarily housed in a 20 gallon but since they went into their new home a 44 gallon they hardly ever hide even though there are more places to hide in this tank, they are always mooching and grubbing around in the gravel.

They are a in a 55 gallon with some Cories, Zebra Danios, and Porthole Catfish. I dont think any of those fish would have them scared enough to hide all the time. Maybe they just need more time to adjust :dunno:

Are they currently really never out unless feeding ?

Mmmm - I find that odd. Mine certainly love to chill in their logs, but I wouldn't call them shy and they're often out and about rooting through the gravel and swimming up and down the current and playing. I think yours probably just do need more time....... :/

Yeah, Im hoping thats it. It took my B. Striata along time to adjust and now they control the 30 gallon they are in. As long as they are eating, Im not going to worry about it.

I currently have three in a tank with juvie bettas. The three did a lot of hiding the first couple of weeks that I had them and then started to scratch whenever they ventured out in the tank. I discovered ick and began the treatment for that. It took about two weeks of slow treatments to finally get rid of most of it. I see one scratching yesterday but nothing like they had been. Now that they are feeling better, I see them out more and more. They love laying in the current either on the gravel or on a plant leaf. The dorsals are up and they seem happy right now. I have a combination of gravel and sand on the bottom and they have borrowed under a couple of decorations and seem to spend parts of the day sleeping on their sides. If interrupted, you'll get a big yawn.
