When we quarantine new fish, what are we mostly looking out for? Sometimes it might depend on the actual fish? Me, I'm talking about corydoras and characin tetras.

These are things I can think of
- white spot
- velvet
- stringy faeces
- excessive rubbing against rocks or substrate
- excessive rapid breathing
- fin rot
- fungus
- other growths
- unexplained deaths

How long does it take for some of the most likely suspects like ick, velvet, or fungus to show up in quarenteen, if at all ?

Agree that most of us would say 4-6 weeks. With cories, a de-wormer is often recommended, other members can advise. Otherwise, do not treat for anything unless it is fairly obvious, and then depending what it is the fish may deal with it. This is where stress comes in. More than 90% of all diseases our aquarium fish get is due to stress. The pathogen may be present, but it is the fish under stress that causes them to be weakened and succumb. And all medications do cause additional stress, so we want to be certain before using any.

See section 3 of the following link for deworming fish.
