Hello friends,
Ive been hearing a lot on how long you should quarantine your fish before setting them up to your main tank. My question is how long should you quarantine them I heard of 2 weeks and up to 6 to 8 weeks. Can anybody help me with which one is better and healthy for my fishes planning on getting some this week. Also how many fishes can you add to a 55 gallon tank. Thanks in advance!

IMO longer is better, but it depends on your quarantine tank, if it has a nice filter, heater (if needed), enough space to swim and maybe some plants and decorations probably your fish will be fine in there for a longer time, but I personally will do 2 weeks - 1 month quarantine. As for your 55g, it depends what you put in there, my only advice is choose species that will thrive in your current water parameter so you don't have to worry much about ph, etc

There is no set number of fish that can be added to a tank, it depends on so many variables.

The best thing to do it tell us how hard your water is (look on your water provider's website), then list the fish you like. We can advise which are suitable for your water, which need to be in groups, and if any of the fish on your list won't get on together.

I’m still thinking of what kind of fishes I would want to get, any you recommend? I’m still learning and doing my research on all this.

We can only suggest fish once we now the hardness of your water. If we suggest soft water fish and you have hard water, or the other way round, the fish will suffer.

my water is usually hard.

Are these going into a new tank? If so there is no need to quarantine. The main reason for the quarantine is to protect existing fish from diseases which may be present in the new fish.

There are two GH units used in fishkeeping, ppm and dH. Your 150 ppm converts to 8.4 dH. This is at the top end of soft. It is too soft for hard water fish, but a bit too hard for those fish which need very soft water.

There are many fish suitable for this hardness. The simplest thing would be for you to visit your local fish stores, do not buy anything but make a note of the fish you like and post them here.

For the first fish in a tank you don't need to quarantine as quarantining is to prevent any disease the new fish may have doesn't get passed on tot he fish already in the tank. But after the first batch of fish, quarantining is recommended for the next batch.

Got it after the first batch I will sure quarantine my fishes. In another note since I’ll be quarantine fishes and I’ll be using the ich treatment on the fishes on my quarantine tank can I add sand to my quarantine tank? Good or bad idea if I’m adding ich to the tank.

Substrate of some sort is always beneficial in a tank, if only because fish prefer to have something there.

The best treatment for ich is heat. Ich medications are rough on fish and should only be used as a last resort. The best way to treat ich is by raising the tank temperature to 30 deg C/86 deg F and keeping it there for 2 weeks. But only do this if you see ich on the fish.

Copy that I’ll stay away from ich medication and treat it only with heat. Thank you so much!!!
