I have had my main tank (128L UK) for near on 3 weeks.I have 6 platies (who in turn have had 5+ babies) helping me do a cycle.... (I know...it was sheer ignorance on my behalf...would do different if I was to do again!) :*)

I am being told that I really need to set up a Quarantine tank before I think about introducing any new fish. I have got myslef a small 14L tank, a heater & a filter.

Just getting my head round the big tank...so I am in need of some sympathetic help.

What next? How long? etc etc :/

Well it's always best to quarantine new fish as you don't no what they could be fetching into the tank, usually 3 to 4 weeks you quarantine new fish for, but you will need to take some mature filter sponge from the maintank filter into the hospital filter, but your tanks hasn't cycled yet, or you can do daily water changes in the hspital tank, as not everybody use filters in them.

this is me and im still a newbie as well, some lfs quartine fish themsleves is it still best to do it yourself as well?

You could keep the filter cycled by running it on your main tank. When you need to use the quar tank, take enough water from your main tank to fill the quar tank half way. Fill the rest of the way with fresh water, hook up the filter & heater, & put in the new fish. I always keep plenty of spare filters running.

As far as lfs quaring their fish, I trust no one's quarantine procedures but my own.

I will say that I have one place I trust and will put the fish from there straight in my tanks. I have 4 angels from a store I had never bought from before quarantined now though. I doubt I will leave them 3 to 4 weeks though. More like 1 to 2 as long as they look good and don't show any signs of disease.

Personally I don't Qur. because I don't have enough room for a Q tank, I barely have enough room for my tanks as it is. It will be different once I can close down my two ten gallons but until then any fish I get are going straight in with the main fish.

Cheers Guys...haven't been on for a few days, but all good advise.

Good news.... I think my main tank is close to being fully cycled!
