I am thinking of buying one of those small Eclipse tanks (5gal.) for a male betta. I've been on the websites that show all these beautiful and expensive bettas and was wondering if anyone has seen these kind of fish in a lfs?

I have never been in a fish store where they had bettas in anything other than the small cups. Even the best stores have them in small containers and although there are many beautifully colored bettas in the stores, i've seen nothing compared to what i see online.

Anyone been to a store that actually specializes in bettas?

I can't say I've been to any of my LFS and seen them stocking bettas. If you ask though, most of them are willing to order you what you want. At least mine are. I'm thinking of asking them to order me a nice looking quality betta.

nope, the only fancy ones i've seen ahve been on the web. all my lfs just carry the "mutts in a cup" (but mutts are beautiful, i have three). of course, you could talk to one of your lfs and see if they could order some for you.

while i've never seen Pedigreed Bettas in any LPS, most will happily order one for you. after all, purebred Bettas cost more money, which means they'd be making a big sale and letting you know they'll order more fish for you... just, be sure to pick them up ASAP, most pet stores won't care if it's purebred or not and just stick it in a cup unless you give them direct orders to put him in a special container, calm-species tank or call you when he comes in.

Fan,
I see it says you are from Tehas. Well there is a TABS (Texas Area Betta Society but don't quote me on exact name). If you are wanting pure bred strains then I would get in contact with these people. You might get lucky like I did and find out they are only a few miles away like I did.
I got on the web just like you and found out the President of the largest betta organization in the United States lived 14 minutes away. Even if you do not buy any fish, I can say I learned a lot more about the fish just by visiting him.
Signed,
Sondan
P.S. I am now trying to get him to my new house....hey bribery works :p

I too really want a Betta for the tank in my room, but I can't find any anywhere, I'm going to ask my lfs to order me one it I think...are there different "breeds" of Bettas, i'm not sure what to ask for...I want something pretty, but I do'nt know what to ask for...any tips people..?

There are many diffrent types of tails and color types to choose from; For example
you could ask for a black mallano crowntail or a white opaqe ultra delta. But if I were you i'd visit bettasrus.com or bettacentral.com, are both good sites to learn about the diffrent types of bettas. You could also search yahoo for betta color types. :D

Thanks to everyone, my personal preference would be to just order it myself off of bettasrus...cheaper than paying a pet store. Also you can bid on one from I think it is Aqua.com..it's like an ebay for fish.

You can find allkinds of bettas and tons of other kinds of fish and equipment on Aquabid.com.
They usually have great stuff on there but I can never get any of it :-( because 99 % of the sellers will only ship to the US.
Oh well...

I think the prices for the bettas are fare but the shipping is uasually to expensive for me. :( The bettas are like $25.00 plua shipping which is about $25.00-30.00 would make it a total of $50.00

wow, like plecos are rare and expensive in australia, people seem to have the opposite in america with bettas! The bettas here are about $7 US dollars. And they are highly plentiful everywhere!

Here in the Phoenix area Pets Inc carries Crown Tails at 9.99 a piece although I can't attest to the lineage. They are far and a way the best LFS I have found. I understand the hesitation at buying online mostly because in order to get a guarantee you need to ship over night which adds like 25.00 to your cost which can be any where from 10.00 to 300.00. here is a site you might try and see if any one is local in your area www.aquabid.com

Good luck
