info about the penguin 330 "All penguin bio-wheel power filters deliver simple, easy, three-stage aquarium filtration... Without the hassle of air pumps, valves, tubing or air stones. Convenient rite-size filter cartridges come ready to use with each filter... Ready to mechanically and chemically remove waste, discoloration and smells. Biological filtration is provided by the wheel- wheel - proven best in its class at removing toxic ammonia and nitrite by independent laboratory tests."

info about the emperor 280 "Flow and filtration efficiencies unmatched by other filters in their class; as much as twice the filter cartridge capacity; additional chemical filtration capability; extra effective, spray bar-driven bio- wheel wet/dry biological filtration...the emperor filtration systems truly are the future of advanced aquarium technology. The emperors feature not one pump (as in ordinary power filters), but two separate water pumps. The flow pump directs water through the entire multi-stage filtration system. The bio-pump pressurizes and sends streams of prefiltered, oxygen-rich water through the adjustable spray bars to power each bio-wheel, and...the unique, patent pending emperor design allows the bio-pump to continue powering the bio-wheels even when flow pump output is reduced by the convenient one-touch flow control."

I've been using an Emperor for about 4 years. Never had one problem. Love it. Will buy one for my next tank.

I have a Penguin 330 on my 29 gallon and like it very much. But if given the choice again, I would probably get an Emperor 400.

i would go for the emporer400 as well. I had one in my 29 gallon which was stocked with larger messier fish and it did a wonderful job! Now it is on my 55 gallon and still doing a great job!

How many litres per hour for the filters? What fish? Any really messy ones, plants?

IMO - Always go for the one that does more lph.
well... i dont exactly know the lph, on the 29G im planin on angelfishes mostly and some other kinds, and on the 30G im plannin on gouramis and other kinds as well

what kind of liverbearers are "larger liverbearers" and what are scavenger catfish???

yes im planin on get plants as well

I never use anything but Eheims.

I'm like lateral line, always use eheims. My old 29 gallon had a 2213 eheim, I hate all HOB, no offense to anybody.

They're made by the same company. Pick they higher flowrate.

HOB are hang on back, the typical type of filters. Canisters are containers full of filtration media that sit underneath your tank, hidden away. Spend the extra money and get a canister, stay away from the fluvals though, don't let the cheap price get you. HTH and good luck!

Tough call between those two.

In the end, I'd probably lean towards the Penguin, because although it has smaller media chambers, there are two of them.

edit: although if you have two tanks to filter, that means you'll have four (and possibly up to eight) media 'cartridges' to maintain.

well.... for sure there's difference on "extra bucks" :S its like 60 somethin :S the canister filter. i was going on the emperor 400 or 280 , but this canister thingy really got me, but its a waaay expensive *>8o(*
whats better on them besides they are hidden?! cuz i need a really good reason to expend ALL that money on one i dont want to think about gettin 2 of 'em , and im so annoyin with the bucks, becuz im tryin not to ask my parents to give me their money... (obviously i'll need a lot from them) but im tryin as far as possible to get it all by myself :)
