I have three seperate questions, so I thought I would just cram them in one post:

First, and most urgent, I bought seven marbled hatchetfish. I hadn't been able to find any for the longest time, until last week. I brought them home last night, and this afternoon I only saw two. At the bottom of my tank (65 gallon) I saw what I assume was five hatchetfish skeletons (I have quite a few scavengers-kuhli and yo-yo loaches). I never saw anyone harass them (for the most part passive fish....rio tetras, mollys, ottos, female bettas, a krib). So I thought for sure something was horribly wrong with my water, but I tested it and everything came out fine-ammonia and nitrite both 0, and I can't remember exactly what the nitrate was, but it was low (under 20?). I really just need some reassurance that I just got a bad batch of fish, and I didn't murder five innocent fish.

Second, I have a bad hair algae problem (another reason I assumed my nitrates would be high). Tried limiting the light my tank is getting, and doing more frequent water changes, but it doesn't seem to be helping. I think I heard flying foxes will eat the stuff. Is that correct? Will they do alright with my over-curious loaches? And should I just get one? I think I read they don't like company of other FF.

Third and final, when I got home with the hatchets last night, I noticed a non-hatchet with them. Found out it is a black phantom tetra. I don't have any others, but I do have some von rio tetras. This one doesn't seem to be pal-ing around with the other tetras. Should I get him four or five more phantoms? If so, is it alright to do it slowly? Around here they are $6 a piece, and $30-36 at one time is alot for me.

Marble hatchets do not travel well.
It is just one of those things, so don't beat yourself up.

flying foxes will not eat algae, what you need is a SAE (siamese algae eater).
FF should be only kept as a single specamine but SAE's can be kept as one or a group of 5 or more.

as with 99% of tetras they do need to be in groups and six would be the least.
I would get him at least two mates now and then build up the group when your budget allows.
also black phantoms will school with red phantoms, so if reds are cheaper in your area that may be an option for you.
