Putting too much whitespot tretment in tank

thankyou for all your help ill keep you posted on how they get on in over next few days

Yes we all like to no how they are doing, good luck.

How are they?

The tetra, frog and catfish will suffer more from the overdose, since with a lot of Ich meds you are supposed to administer only a half dose anyway for these species. If you have something you could put them into, I would recommend this. If not, a couple of water changes a day will work towards diluting the meds, and it will also help cope with a rise in Ammonia and Nitrites which I am sorry to say will be almost inevitable due to the newness of the setup, and the levels of fish stress. It is likely you already have Ammonia readings anyway, your tank is unlikely to be cycled yet (there are pinned articles on cycling in the Beginners section)

Keep feeding to a bare minimum, gradually raise the temperature in your tank to about 82 (by a dgree or so a day), keep up the water changes, and add some carbon to your filter to help absorb the remaining meds. I would also put an airstone into the tank, meds and higher temperatures reduce the oxygen content in the water so some surface disturbance is necessary to aid gas exchange (If you don't have an airstone, try positioning your filter so that it shifts the water surface)

I would also invest in separate liquid test kits for Ammonia and Nitrites (at this stage) then later, Nitrates. Liquid test kits are more accurate, and I am not convinced by these all in one kits anyway.

The Ich is probably a result of putting so many fish into an uncycled tank, and overloading the immature and fragile bioload. Do you know anyone who could let you have some mature gravel to help you seed your filter? If so, put an amount in a stocking and drop it into your tank. Old filter media (that has just been changed out of a mature filter) will also help.

A 40% water change and 48 hours filtering over carbon is usually enough to remove the remains of a normal dose of meds. I would suggest 2x15% water changes a day (too much in one go can be stressful to the fish) whilst filtering over carbon. Keep this up for maybe another 4 days or so, then give the tank 24 hours to rest. Keep the temp up, the water oxygenbated, the lights off (reduces stress) and feeding to a small pinch every two-three days, if anything at all.

Once you have stabilised your tank from the med overdose you can readdress the Ich issue. Your raised temperature will already have accelerated the lifecycle of the Ich, so it will probably be at the free swimming stage of its lifecycle, which is the only stage where any meds can kill it. Be sure of the volume of your tank, then start your dose again. I would advise that, this time, you half the recommended dose to start with and see how you get on. There is a pinned topic on Ich in this forum.

I wish you the very best of luck!
