I saw a fish in a lfs today . No lable on the tank , and no one reliable enough to ask what it was . I'll have to ask the owner next time I go back . Anyway I think I was a purple gudgeon . The fish was white/ish under neeth/ greyish/brown sides and top with blue/green and maroon/purple speckles on it's flanks ,and small iridescent eyes , made them look green .I've read of 2 types of purple gudgeons [striped and spotted ]and one is said to be endangered . It didn't lay on the bottom , it was swiming[ kind of hovering] in one spot ,I watched it for about five minutes. It seemed to be healthy . Has anyone had any expirience with these fish ? If this is that fish , what would be a good minimum tank size, what do they eat ?, water parameters [temp/ ph /fresh/brackish]?. The article I read said they get to about 12 or 13 cm[ is this true?] . Could they be kept with any cichlids of similar size , I was thinking maybe a jewel cichlid [ no mated pairs ]and /or a puffer species .My tank would have plenty of cover [plants/rocks/caves] they all do . Thanks for any advice .

Sounds like Northern Spotted Gudgeon - Mogurnda mogurnda. They may be Ok with less aggerssive ci

Edit: This post was much longer when posted, including a link to a pic of the fish. I checked it after posting and it was all there incl. the working link. What happened??

Mogurnda Mogurnda Gobies which from your description I would think they are, can reach up to 7 inches however, 5 inches is more common. They are a relativly peaceful fish, but they will eat any fish up to 2 inches in size. They live happily in freshwater enviroments. I would recommend a tank of a least 30gallons or 20gallons if the tank is long. They will need somwhere to rest and hide like a cave, they aren't fussy and will eat most foods. They can be housed with relativly aggressive fish as they are more than capable of defending themselves.

Good Luck

I own a Morgurnda morgurnda which is also called the Northern Trout Gudgeon. Mine is about 15cm so he i think he is fully grown. He lives in a 4ft freshwater tank with polypterus etc. Mine loves bloodworm but they also like:
-Shrimp (live and dead)
-Cockles (not shelled)
-prawns (the sort you get from super markets)
- most other meaty foods

If you need more advice you could ask CFC he knowsw loads about them(he helped me with mine)

Thanks alot guys , I went back and bought it today [ the tank was labledthis time , must have been new last week ]. It really is a nice looking fish , about 4 " long right now .
He's in a 30 gal[ 30 "] with plants, rocks and 2" pvc that has java ferns rubber banded to them .
My son wants to put 1 or 2 same sex Jewel cichlids in with him , as well as a pictus cat[all about the same size] . Any thoughts on that ?

I read in the forums about the U.K. and the feeding of verteibrae animals to pets [ it being illegal ] .Sorry but I have some feeder guppies in with him now , he should eat them , right ?
He's in a newly set up tank . I put some gravel [ about a quart / liter] and the plants from 1 of our established tanks , and don't want to push the limites of that bacteria with any uneaten food , this is why the feeders are in with him . We will keep an eye on the cycle [ make water changes when needed ] and will add the other fish 1 at a time accordingly [1 a week or 1 every 2 weeks .
