hi there i have 2 discus that have been in my tank for about 5 months there well established and are just lovely i have a 5ft tank and PLENTY of room. i really want puntius denisonii ( red torpedo barbs ) i already have cardinals and rummy noses darting around and the discus don't mind i think id be fine but i would like other people opinion.

a display tank at A5 aquatics has discus and denisonii barbs together but the discus are never out on full display.... they are big and active fish and may annoy the discus, also they are very aggressive eaters so i cant see the discus getting much food. my barbs are alwys first to the food and come to the tank front everytime i approach thinking they are getting fed
gorgeous fish though :good: i just dont think it would be fair on the discus as they are very slow eaters

What is the size of the tank at A5 Aquatics? Perhaps as this is a 5ft the Discus will have more space?

Its roughly a 5ft tank in A5 Aquatics. It is pretty darn huge, although its a bowfront so it might be a little deceptive. Personally i wouldnt mix the two, Have you thought about Odessy Barbs? Smaller, less aggressive and a little more suitable if you want to mix them with Discuss.

yeah thats the tank im talking about :good: it has rummynose tetras, denisonii barbs, cardinal tetras along with a few other species and then there are 3 big discus that are priced at £150 each   :hyper: its no wonder they havent sold them  theyre not even that nice and 1 is covered in peppering....

back to the original post, discus are really best kept in a species tank with a few dither fish and maybe a few slow feeding bottom feeders. if the tank is too hectic then they wont be happy and wont get much if any food and will slowly go down hill due to stress and starvation...... when i kept discus in a planted tank the tetras in with them didnt leave much for the discus to eat due to their fast greedy feeding habits. discus however are very slow eaters that come back for seconds, they are in no rush to fill themselves. also the food that goes under decor or plants etc cant be reached because of the shape of the discus, this is where the bottom feeders come into play :good:
