do they make quiet ones?
mine hums and is quite annoying, and ive only had it 2 days.....

carnt remember what make it is

if you are referring to powerheads, i have a maxijet and i cant even tell its on unless i see it catch debris in its flow. or turn it off and back on.

sorry air pumps not powerheads ,,,

My airpump is quite noisy too. I found that resting it on a soft surface (I had some old foam underlay from when I layed the flooring upstairs leftover) does the trick. Its still not silent, but its alot better...

I hate airpumps. Stupid things drive me nuts. Back when undergravel filters used to be the thing and I was a teenager living with my parents, I had like three or four airpumps running five tanks in my bedroom and I can't even come close to estimating how much sleep I lost because of them.

I tried everything from wrapping them up in t-shirts to tying rubber bands around them in the middle of the night when they started buzzing and vibrating their way towards the edge of the shelf, or against the side of the metal stand. Aurgh! Anyways, putting something soft on the bottom and wrapping it up really tight with something such as a thick rubber band is the best way I found to reduce noise once they get to the point where they vibrate really bad. New ones usually aren't as bad as old ones, though. I've heard the new Whisper ones with the funny legs on them are a decent design. There isn't anything silent, though.

Know there are people out there who feel your pain. I love my HOB filters because they are so much quieter. Same with anything that is fully submersible.

Just a thought... what about compressed gasses? I have a pretty big compressor in my garage that can refill its 30L cylinder in a couple of minutes to quite a few bar... All I would need is a hole in the wall from the garage to the aquarium room and an airline... hmmm the idea is coming :D

If you don't mind putting holes in your walls, you could just put the air pump in the garage and run the airline tubing from that. Then you wouldn't be able to hear it, and would probably be more energy efficient. Not to mention simpler.

I found a big block of foam with a slit in it and put the air pump inside it and layed it down now I can't hear it at all, just the rest of the filters in my room to get silent now.

I find Kidney beans best for those!!! :D
Nice one boboboy!

I've never payed much attention to air pumps until recent since I thought they were noisy. A few days ago I was at a LFS and and saw a Tetra Whisper air pump in action. It was hard to believe how quiet it was. I had to pick it up to make sure it was running.

I'm an engineer :p That would be too simple, and wouldn't look as geeky :p

But... you are right, I guess I'll do just that, I already have a hole as the previous house owner passed a coaxial cable through that wall... The cable was useless for TV (to me at least), but its great to hide away the CO2 cylinder :D
