Copied this from coldwater cause there's more people here - please help!

"I've got some treating for ick my goldsish seems to have it. The treatment says to remove carbon from my pump if it has any, but i'm not sure which bit the carbon is! It's the HBL-501 hanging filter. Not sure if anyone is familiar with it, but it came with the tank, has no instructions and the writing on the box is mostly japanese/chinese. It's got a white fiber type material in it as well as a big black sponge. Either of these carbon?

Cheers."

The black sponge may be the carbon filter. Usually carbon pads are black, but sometimes they can be a white filter sack with carbon inside (sewn together).

I believe raising the temperature is also a good thing to do with ick, but I would read around for more info. Good luck! :)

Dave: If you have a feel of the yellow looking part, you will probably feel the little pebble-like bits inside the covering. That pebbly stuff is the carbon. If you can properly support the sponge part without it, it will be fine. After the treatment is over, you will probably be told to put the carbon back in. At that point you would install the yellowish filter element. If it is very old, the carbon is probably no longer working which means you would replace it with a new cartridge when its time to put the carbon in to remove the medications.

Legend Oldman47. Much appreciated. Now i was treating my fish using Tetra Medica Goldmed. I'm supposed to put 5ml in every 5 days for 15 days. Now i've had the carbon in the whole time I guess it's not been doing anything? Should I start the medication process again? did a water change last night anyway, about 50%.

I would just keep going with the meds. As Oldman47 said if the carbon is old it won't be doing anything anyway - and I'm guessing it is as you didn't know it was there so probably haven't replaced it. BTW this isn't a problem - I don't bother with carbon unless I need to remove meds.
