I recently set up a Juwel Rio 180. At the mo, it has got 8 Barbs happily swimming about.
I'm thinking about getting a puffer (wont be for a few weeks as the tank is still relatively new) and i read the pinned post saying puffers + other fish isn't great, but you can get away with some.

Does anyone have any good suggestions as to what puffer would be OK with my barbs? or should i give up on the idea?

What are the barbs? Are they some long-finned form?

The two obvious choices are SAPs and irrubesco puffers, both of which can work in tanks this size with fast-moving companions. However, as others will doubtless remind you, what works in one aquarium might not work in another. Puffers are very variable in the way they work. Some of that is genetic, with different populations of C. lorteti for example being peaceful while others are aggressive. But there is also some variation relating to environment and simple "personality".

In short, have a Plan B ready in case you start seeing bites in your barbs.

Cheers, Neale

No long finned barbs, but i did just get a couple of Gourami. im guessing they might be fin nipped?

I did not get chance to note the species name, but my favourite LFS had at least two gorgeous Borneo puffers in stock with red eyes, mixed at least temporarily with what looked like at least late-juvenile Neon Dwarf Rainbows...

I'm cycling there tomorrow f(on my "floating day off") for a proper look round (will try and remember to take mini cam for some video clips), as I discovered yesterday that 1800 was not their closing time (was actually 1730), while they humoured me deciding on five Ctenopoma acutirostre, four Aplocheilus lineatus and a Pantodon buchholzi.

Finally got back to Aquajardin this afternoon, so here as promised, some puffer clips (Borneoo Striped (salivator); Red Tail Red Eye (irrubesco)...

The Salivator looks awsome, I'm so tempted to buy and set up a species only Clearseal 30"x12"x15" tank (using my spare, currently supplemental filter)

They look great :good: I might have to look into the irrubesco puffer i never knew they can work with other fish

i read about puffers for ages and then decided that the south american puffer would be the best to put in my big aquarium as everyone said these will be fine in a community aquarium......WRONG, they bullied the hell out of my other fish, unsettling the tank and nipping fins any chance they got one literally clung on to my red torepdo barbs under fin for bowt 3 secs before my pencil fish chased it off, really got to think really carefully about getting puffers some maybelike a pellet gun, its still a gun just not as harmful

currently rehousing them in my smaller tank as wasnt risking upsetting my tank further

hi all :)

i have had red eyed puffers and they bullied the hell out of each other and the tankmates (including barbs) and were very territorial (especially the male!). i had to give them up in the end they were so bad, well the ones that survived.......! i have litteraly just bought some peruvian/south american puffers and they seem to be fine with a small community, however they are still settling in, so we shall see! hope i could help :)
