Hi,
I've had a figure 8 puffer for almost 9 months now and recently moved it into a 29 gallon aquarium from a 10 gallon. I have a few plants and a couple decorations around the tank but when I turn on the light all my puffer fish wants to do is hide in the corner underneath one of the plants. I also have a silver dollar fish in there and it is doing the same thing. I have a couple other small fish that swim around quite a bit but I am frustrated that my favorite, the puffer, is not very active when the light is on. Last night I noticed that as soon as I turned the light off he got quite a bit more active. Does anyone know if I might have too bright a light or maybe the wrong kind? Thanks for the information!

Sounds like it is too bright too me. If the other fish are fine with bright light you could add a large, dense floating plant to shade a part of the tank so that all the fish will be active.

p.s. Fig. 8 puffers should really be kept in Brackish water (Sg 1.005 - 1.010) for optimum health.

Thanks for the input, I am actually currently in the process of changing from freshwater to brackish so hopefully that helps too.

Yes, I was told that puffers don't like bright light. But maybe that depends on the puffer too. With mine, I have an extra light on a timer that comes on. He does not like that light at all. So I have turned it off and now he is just fine.
