Hi all,

I just finished setting up my tank and it's actually running for the first time right now. I just added a declorinator and I'm letting the tank run for awhile.

It's a 30 gallon tank, blue rocks and it's about 78 degrees.

I've read a ton on Puffer fish and so on...however I still have a question.

Would it be bad to add a small eel with a Puffer Fish?

I would like a somewhat aggressive tank...so I was looking at Puffer Fish, Eels and also some algee-eaters...maybe a crab/lobster or two...

Puffer Fish and Eels eat bloodworms and so on...but the algee-eater could just clean the tank. Is this a no-no?

What can I put in the tank with Puffer Fish...I would hate to have a 30 gallon tank with 1 fish...

I also read that it's not good to add salt to the water...any input?

Thanks,

depending on what sort of puffer you are after, the majority require brackish settings so salt is a yes for them

keeping crabs etc isnt a good idea either, the puffer would probably eat them.

Is the tank cycled? what breed of puffer you looking to get?

I haven't figured out what type...I guess whatever type they have at the local fish store.

***I haven't cycled my tank yet...*** However, I will definitly do that before adding any fish. I'm still reading the stickies and trying to get a good understanding on that.

So I guess I would want "BIGGER" fish than my Puffer right? I just want a nice tank with some oddball fish...( I really don't want Goldfish).

Eh, who told you this? If you have a look at the pinned topic, an overview of the species offered, you'll notie there are more freshwater species available than brackish. It's a common misconception that all puffers need salt water.

I wouldn't assume you can have other fish in a tank with a puffer. It all depends on which puffer you want as to what you can have in the tank with it or not as the case may be.

I can only inform you about Dwarf Puffers and Figure 8 puffers (F8 puffs are best kept in low end brackish set ups) and I have a pair with some bumblebee gobies in a metre long set up. Some people have other tankmates in with F8s that can tolerate brackish water if they have the space, but I don't wish to tempt fate. I may try an American flagfish or two for my problem algae though.

My dwarf puffers have 3 otocinclus catfish in with them and some amano shrimp. I wouldn't add anything else to the DPs tank personally as they are nippy. They take bites out of all sorts of fish to see if they taste good enough to eat.

Google them Hayley. I haven't found them yet and there's no guarantee they'll be compatible. Depends on the individual puffers.
