I set up an aquarium a while ago with the intention of keeping african cichlids however last week I went to my lfs and there were a tank of baby Oscars. They looked so cute at an inch long that my mind was made up there and then. I bought 4 :D with the intention of breeding them later (obviously 2 of them will have to be removed but the lfs will take them back).

My Question is when can you sex Oscars? and how do you do it?

Can I ask which LFS it was, was it Parkers my mum wanted the medium oscar they have there? Also your tank would need to be at least 150g probably 180g just to be safe.

:good:

At the moment they are in a 48x18x15 which I know they will outgrow. Im also aware that I will have to take 2 out when 2 of them pair up. The bit im really not looking forward to is convincing my girlfiend that in about 18 months max that we will need to remove the sofa from the living room so I can get a bigger tank to keep the adults in. Wish me luck with that one

Yes it was Parkers and the medium sized Oscar is beautiful

lol don't think you have 18 months make it 8 months they grow like 1" a month but good luck

I got the last senegal bichir they had on saturday, it's good in theat place, good proces etc.

:good:

its said when breeding oscars you need 3 tanks

180gallon
150gallon
90gallon

the 180 is to put in 4 oscars wait until you get a pair
put them in the 100 gallon with pieces of slate
then the 90 is a grow out tank for anywhere around 200-2000 oscar fry

goodluck feeding all those mouths, and i dont think any lfs will take all those fry because oscars are bred alot and by very many breeders

goodluck :) *before you know it those 4 will get very very aggressive as their tank space shrinks*

There's no sure fire way to sex oscars, you just have to wait for them to pair off ;)

I'd be looking at getting that tank asap, our oscar went from 2-3 inches to 9-10 inches between Xmas and June.

Besides, a bigger tank will mean more room for them to work out who's pairing off with who :D

And omg at the thread posted earlier! Ignore the 48" x 18" rule for a pair, you're going to need a 75g tank at least, preferably 100g. 4ft, where do they get that from *shakes head*
