hi i have a 30 gallon tank i have lr some coral and fish i would like to buy a protein skimmer can anyone recomend the best for my set up

If you want to just buy it and use it without doing work and drilling the tank which I doubt you can now go for a hang on skimmer. I personally have the Biostar flotor and it's very nice piece of kit. Theres also the Turboflotor Hang On Skimmer which I cant comment on but I know turboflotor are good so my guess this should be to really.

i have a CPR BakPak2 system... looks like it has a simlar setup to the biostar. I like my system a lot. I don't have any corals but i have 35+ lbs of live rock in a 36 gallon tank. You can read the rest of my inhabitants in my profile. But it works really good for me.

I'm fairly new to SW tanks. But as far as I've seen and from the little I've read, bottom line a skimmer takes in water that comes in through a comb type opening so the water surface tension is broken and the layer of filth and protien is effectivly skimmed off the surface.

The gunk is then trapped and the clean water is pumped out...... is this all it does?

There are many different models. Problem for you on such a small tank is, it is going to detract visually as it will be hanging on. But without a sump you have no choice. People like the AquaC Remoras for the hang-on versions. The Turboflotor hangon will draw the eye more than your tank at that size so I wouldn't recommend it. The AquaC design is fairly benign. It's pricey but you can also use it on larger tanks when you upgrade

i was thinking of getting a remora..but then i saw the red sea prism deluxe..so its between those 2..does anyone know where i can get the best price for one of these?? as always thanks for the help this is better than any book.

Don't get a prism! I tried adjusting one of those the other day and they are the worst skimmer I'v come across. once you'v got it right, then I think it would probably be ok but getting it right is a pain. it either overflows or dosn't bubble up enough.

the build quality isn't great either.

That's almost like saying you are going to buy a car and are deciding between a Geo Metro and a Jaguar.
