I was wondering if any of you guys knew the pros and cons of melafix. I bought a bottle the other month to help fix torn fins since I had seen the product mentioned so many times here. After I got it home, I happend to read the warnings and I noticed one dealt with human reproduction and-at least my bottle-mention of possible fertility issues if handled by women. So far I have made sure to either wear gloves while dosing or handling the bottle and then washing thorougly with soap and water afterwards. Has anybody else heard of any other cons or even any pros besides the ones it's known for?

Well, over in the betta forum, there are no pros. Melafix is too strong for bettas. You will want to either dilute it, or go for bettafix. From what I understand its active ingredient is Melaluca (Tea Tree Oil) so I'm not sure what all the fuss is about. Hmm.

use both melafix and pimafix on my fish and haven't had problems with them. Quite the opposite in fact. Ido use a half dose for bettas though. I've only needed it for my crown tail but it did the job and I'm still alive too :D

You simply use a lower dose for bettas. As long as you do that there should be no problem and fins heal very well with this and very clean water.

As for any risk to pregnant women, wearing gloves as you have been doing, and washing hands well afterwards even if none got on your skin are both great ideas so I would think you should have no problems with using it.
