I am thinking of starting a freshwater aquarium. I am getting a 55 gallon tank and I am thinking of getting the following fish, could you tell me if these combinations would work.
1 - Coolie or Clown Loach
2 - Leopard Catfish
2 - Zebra Danio
2 - Dwarf Gourami
2 - KIssing Gourami
4 - Neon Tetras
4 - Guppies
2 - Black Mollies
1 - Male Swordfish and 1 female
2 - Angelfish
2 - Electric Yellow Cichilds
1 - Red Tailed Black Shark

Thank you,
John

sorry kingkong id have to dissagree...

angels and neons dont get along ( the angels will feast on the neons)
i dunno bout cicilds? more of the experts can get that one for ya... i think it would be ok

I do not suggest the electric yellows as stated they are cichlids. They are relatively peaceful with their own kind but could very easily kill your other fish if they wanted too. Plus i understand they are rather territorial and aggressive when mating.. In general chiclids are not recommended for community tanks because of this. But each fish is different in attitude/ temperment as we all know.

But utmost is the fact that they require a different water chemistry as the other fish. A higher ph is nessasary for african cichlids in general.

I am not a expert on the african cichlid but I think the info I gave you is generally correct. If you want a community tank with cichlids I would suggest the dwarf species. The Rams and Kribs are more apt to go into a community tank safely and peacefully.

Not only that, I would not get just One clown loach (if you choose that) they prefer being in groups of at least 2 upwards, on there own they tend to sulk and not live very long, being a social fish with their own kind

I like a tank with just a few different kinds. If you get too many different fish you get the Noah's arc syndrome. 2 x 2. A large school of fish makes a stunning display. I'd get a large school of tetras.

hmmm... i think i'd stay with either cichlids or the other community fish as Alien Spawn already said, clown loaches like to be in groups. Kuhli loaches also like to be in groups as it makes them more secure, but they aren't schooling fish. for livebearers get a 2 female per male ratio or the female(s) will be harassed by the male(s). zebra danios also like to be in schools, same with neons (i agree with akhtar about 6 and up)

Is it 55 UK or US? If US, that is 45 UK.

I only found out recently that kissing gouramis get to 12", I am scared about having just one and my tank is much larger!

As for clowns and kuhlis, I agree with the others. Clowns should be in a pair at least and I definatley wouldn't have just one kuhli as they are shy creatures and although they are not schooling as such, they seem to need others for comfort and confidence.

With all livebearers, eg swordtails, gupies, mollies and platies you should have 2 females at least to every male to minimise the males harassing the females too much.

I would think that as neons are small they will be schooling fish and will need to be in a group of more than 4 and an angel may not be best with them but people's opinions vary on this.

I'm sorry but I think you need to re-think your fish combination.
