Promoting Planted Aquariums

I think it has been a great thread, as it has highlighted what planted tanks look like, but also reasons not to do one. I would hate to think someone bought some bala sharks which need a lot of oxygen and then dump them in a low gas exchange tank and then suffer the inevitable deaths that would ensue.

Hey AndywG

Just been reading your post about the Bala shark i LOVE the look of them. Your quite right, its a good job you let me know they are not suitable for a planted aquarium, i think i`ll buy one and put it in my 10g nano.

Chris

ps .... i seriously always thought it was spelt Dürrenmatt....and also a very interesting comparison to choose!

pps....was it Stanislavsky who wrote the critically acclaimed theatrical release of Humpty Dumpty, called "Dumpty Humpty"?

 :D

Quite possibly one of the worst attempts at trolling I have ever seen.

Try harder next time ;)

From the point of view of a relative noob this is a very interesting thread! I started off with every intention of walking the planted path but found that as a noob setting up just the aquarium cycling etc , was headache enough general bad advice and my lack of skill let me down, having recently spent over £100 on plastic plants that I know I can't kill I am now happy with the way my aquarium looks.

But in good time I know i will try the planted path again .

Fish keeping is as much science as it is an art, just as planted tanks are.
Planted tanks are hardly pure art either.

Generally, whatever the goal of the aquarist is, I try and facilitate that further.
Some are interested in fish, some plants, some science and some art.

But.........to be a well rounded person/hobbyists, one should pursue all aspects related to their hobbies/obsessions.

The latest monster I have worked on combines the giant scale, the gaint art, plants/fish, engineering etc all into one system.

I have found many aquarist that are fish olny folks have many misconceptions and myths about planted tanks, NO3, NH4, PO4, algae, fish health, disease and O2 levels.

I've yet to need medications in over 15 years of focusing on planted tanks.
I'm also very much a fish fanatic, been that way for over 30 years.
But I'm also a plant fanatic and an art fanatic and a scientist.

Life is short, but it is wide.

Regards,
Tom Barr
