Problems With Water Quality

Mmmmmmm, can you just let me know how many powerheads you have, where they are in the tank in relation to the rock and how much flow? Also can you remind me how many litres your tank is and how much live rock? And :p your stock level. Can you also tell me what the is extra filter is please?

One last question, was the sand new when you put it in or from an old tank and if new has it recently had a large disturbance?

Thats enough questions I think :p

Looking at the pictures I would say you had more than enough LR but cant see any powerheads

The trick with LR is not quantity its about having good flow over the Surface of the LR sometimes less is better

You need enough power heads to turn over the tank at least 20 - 40x times an hour 20x should be good if you are keeping softies and LPS

SPS need more closer to 40x

in my Lido of 120L I have a 4000LPH pump as I will be keeping 1 or 2 easy SPS

Back left of tank is the skimmer. Back right of tank is HOB filter. That moves water at the back of the tank. Front right is 1 powerhead pointed at the middle of the rock. I used to have it pointed across the front of the tank and just recently moved it to point at the LR (Advice given by forum) How much flow, no idea. Powerhead came with the adopted tank. Tank is 29 gallons (109 L) Unknown LR. Some came with the tank when I adopted it, I added about 17LBs more. (When I moved it, tank was 20 Gallon and I moved into a 29 Gallon)

Stock Level is: 3 green chromis (small) 1 cleaner shrimp, 1 pistol shrimp, 1 watchman goby, 1 clown goby, 1 small hermit crab, 2 clowns. 1 fire goby who is not doing well at all.

Live sand is new. I gravel vac it when I clean the tank. I also just removed all the rock and sifted the sand and cleaned the rock in old aquarium water.

Are you thinking more powerheads to remove the food from the LR?

Well, i'm thinking we really need to find out how much flow you have in your tank, can you check what the powerhead is?

Also, feeding, how much how often?

The powerhead is Hydor Kobalia 1. The sticker says 400gph. 4 W.

I was feeding 1 cube of brine shrimp per day. I've just cut down to 1/2 cube everyday. I could have created this problem. -_- Overfeeding and using turkey baster to get some brine shrimp down in tunnels to ensure the pistol shrimp was getting food.

Don't worry about the shrimp he will find food somewhere I'm sure someone could tell us exactly but I would think a shrimp could live for weeks without any new food added to the tank just on what he could pick up off of rocks. Just looking at your pictures again and this may have already been covered but is that big white piece on top in the middle a new piece and if so was it fully cured?

Ahhh, yes, suspect you have found the problem!

Yes, it is a new cured LR piece. 3 New pieces were added, all cured.

Just wonderd seffie are we thinking were overfeeding or the fact theres probably a tunnel full of decaying food? only ask because i though for that amount of stock 1 cube of brine shrimp wasnt bad in fact id probably add a little mysis to 1/2 and 1/2. Not disagreeing just wondering if im over feeding too ? lol

I doubt the food stays stuck in the tunnels for long, the bristle worms will have a field day :hey: however i cube every day is a lot of food in just 29 gallons of water
