I've been round a couple of lfs and asked at both if they have ammonia, and both looked at me like I'm stupid. When explaining it was to start cycling a tank, both offered some form of biological supplement ie. Nutrafin "Cycle". Somewhere else I've read that these sort of cycle suppliements are no good.

Where else can I get a pure source of ammonia? Might it be sold under a different/brand name. Or whatelse can I be using as an alternative.

Thanks

You can find it at any grocery store. Just makes sure there are no additives or fragrances.

I have just this afternoon managed to get a bottle of pure household ammonia from a local hardware shop in a nearby village. I set up my new Fluval Vicenza tank yesterday and am just starting to cycle.
I tried two major chemist stores for ammonia with no success. Try a hardware shop if you have one nearby.

you could just wee in the tank! Ive heard people do this in the past and it worked :hyper:

Robert Dyas or larger Boots chemists will stock pure ammonia (used for window cleaning)
as said before, has to be pure with no addatives

I hope they do, my local chemists has nothing but cheap perfume and naff makeup. They don't even hold my perscription drugs, but have to order them each time.....

that is disgusting  but I guess once the tank has cycled there will be no ammonia left so in theory the pee has gone by then??

Well, 'pee' is pretty much just ammonia, uric acid, protiens, vitamins and minerals. So one could make an argument that pee would provide essential trace elements and proteins!!!! for your future fish

Yeah tell your fish that when they are gulping in your pee

I wonder if my fish pee too much, that's why my ammonia is so high :p (its in the middle of cycling and the ammonia won't go away!).

There is nothing wrong in starting a tank by urinating in it (provided that you are not on medications of any kind)
many Japanese Koi farms use this method when setting up a new breeding vat/pond.
urinating in a tank that contains fish is not a good idea though.
