So I have a problem that is two fold -- both surrounding algae wafers. The first is that no matter when I put it in, day, night, lights on, lights out after calming, my Danios, Rasboras, and Corys will NOT stay away from it. The plecs get in there a bit, but mostly the others just ravage it like a bunch of slimy heathens.

The second is the mess they make. I have gravel, and it gets down in the substrate and pollutes the tank pretty good. Two algae wafers without a top notch gravel vac puts me over 40ppm nitrates, and I've found that my Corys hate nitrates (not to mention I'm not in love with vacuuming the tank to death at every cleaning).

That said, is it ok to feed the plecs almost all fresh veggies? All the other fish stay away from the zucchini (courgettes for the people across the pond) and it doesn't dirty the tank, so I was considering making their diet one piece of veggie every other night, and maybe tossing in an algae wafer the day before I plan to vacuum anyhow.

Anything wrong with almost all veggies, feeding every other day? I know they are herbivores mostly, however wasn't sure if they would be missing something key without some sort of supplemental wafers.

I feed my plecos nothing but fresh veggies and fruit. I will also feed the a cooked shrimp on occasion.
mine are doing very well on the fresh stuff.

I feed mine algae wafers and zucchini, sometimes a bit of butternut pumpkin.

I have apple snails, who polish of anything they may leave behind, so i dont get an issue with nitrates rising.
