Our cat spent 15 years as an indoor cat. He goes out now, with our encouragement, to eat grass from the bit of the garden between our house and next door. So far, the only thing he's caught has been a moth in the house.
But last year, our younger son split up with his partner so he and his one eyed 18 year old cat came to live with us while he was house hunting, then buying a house. As soon as the cat was allowed out he found the voles in the garden and pretty soon there were none left. He only brought one in to give to our son, but took it back outside before releasing it, thank goodness.
I don't think our cat would know what a vole was even if one ran up to him.
