Pressurised CO2

Hey Nodding Dino - fed up of mixture changing already?!

Changing the mixture doesn't worry me too much, it's a 5 minute job after all...but I can see that going pressurised is a much more elegant solution...at the moment a fluctuating CO2 level is the weakest link in my setup...for the sake of spending a few extra quid now, I wonder whether I should just jump in and do it.

My baby daughter LOVES the tank, and with another one on the way (baby, not tank...well not yet ;) ), I like the idea of reducing meddling time further!

Just thought id post a little word of warning to everybody, im reading up a bit more on the JBL co2 systems and apperantly the regulator on their systems is oversized and wont fit any other regular co2 bottle, so if you ever want to upgrade to a larger bottle than the 500g you might be a bit stuck.

Sorry ADelphi dont mean to be putting a downer on your new purchase but i thought i would let others know because quite a few people are considering a pressurised system at the moment and for me anyway the JBL was a hot contender

Was this an early birthday present ? I thought your birthday was only next monday ;)

it's just a toss up between Denerle and JBL

I bought it early so I could set it up and get it running before I went away for 2 weeks. My DIY mixtures would have run out otherwise greeting me with an algae filled tank upon my return.

Dennerle all the way - you won't regret it!

The size of the bottle doesn't bother me, the fact the bottle is reusable is the bonus as the D&D are disposable and would cost me more. ;) are we getting into size matters :D

Quote from manual note The JBL pressure reducer vario has been specially designed to operate with re-fillable CO2 bottles with external filters and with a W 21,80x1/14 connection thread and may only be opperated with these bottles. The pressure reducer should on no account be operated with disposable bottles using this adapter.

Also that guys link i posted with the shots of the diffuser in his tank, its far to low as the manual says it should be placed no more than 2cm below the surface of the water.

nodding_dino *Adelphi phones nodding_dino so he/she can take details and type report* ;) i'm no good at writting reports it either works or it doesn't, i like it so far its quite simple. It does says in the manual for the solenoid valve to be first connected to a continuous current before opening up the valves on the bottle and after running in for 48 hours then the solenoid valve can be supplied with power from the preffered power source eg: timer switch.

I've set it up and it is in my tank cupboard, i'm doing my water change tomorrow so i'll set it up proper then, when i have more time.

I personally think both systems are good but the JBL diffuser, reusable bottle and solenoid valve swung it for me.

Anyways i seem to have pet snails and i think they all be snacking on my beloved plants :grr: time fo a cup of tea :fun:

When you say re-useable...

How do you refill it?

I might be wrong (and I'll check when I go tomorrow) but I think the JBL 2 is £130 at my lfs.

Ah well I was wrong. What I saw was actually £125 but it was the JBL Easy 2 - meaning a non-refill cylinder system :( though otherwise seemingly the same as the Profi 2.
Just waiting for some money to come in and then off to see if I can do a deal (internet price match) with my lfs :) I would prefer giving my business to a lfs if I can and if they are willing to match they price, then I'm on for a deal :hey:

By the way gf225, I spoke to them about the refill procedure. Apparently he says they can do the JBL refills in a jiffy as they just do a straight exchange and it costs something like £9 (I hand in the empty cylinder and they hand me a newly filled one). Whereas he's not so sure about being able to do Dennerle as they don't keep any spares in stock and it would mean sending away (if they can even do it if Dennerle has the same fittings).

How are you doing it ? Have sorted out the refills for the future ?

£109.99 on Aquatics online thats the best i have seen, dont know how much postage would cost, but i imagine they weigh quite a bit, i know the refills usually average £10.

I think gf has some..cough.."infleunce" and will get his refills for free.

Well i've set up my Jbl proflora 2 i do have a few teething problems, the cylinder valve was so tight i couldn't open it fully, it would quater turn anti clockwise but that was it and i didn't feel i knew enough to force it so i let the guy at the shop do it today :D

I find also the dosage valve very stiff too, so in her best little britian voice says but "i'm a lady"

So i've started off with a bubble every three seconds that is every other rung on the diffuser.

The other problem for me is the plug for the solenoid, it is a two pin plug with the 3 pin extension, so it fits into the mains plug ok but doesn't fit either of my digital timers that i bought from argos.

Any one have a digital timer which fits the JBL plug system.

And houndour how do i refill the cylinder, well i take it to my lfs and they refill it, in other words they give me a refilled cylinder for £8, no shipping and no waiting.

Cut if off ! :D Just buy a 3 pin plug at a hardware store and connect - voila !

Good to hear you're getting it sorted. Have you kept an eye on your pH now that it's a very constant 1 bubble / 3 seconds ?

what time of timer do you have that it doesnt fit?

Other than your teething probs, you like it? The diffuser is a spiral one? Do you have measurements of it? What size is your tank? Mines a 19UK gallon. I'm sure I could hide it behind some swords.

Is the proflora 2 the one thats around £170?

May take a drive to my LFS to investigate what they have.

You may invalidate any warranty if you do this. If its even warrantied.

:S you might be right - so check the warrantee stipulations first.

You can get the Profiset 2 for £156.99 at Aquatics-Online- postage included. So if you do go to your lfs, see if they can match it :)

Thanks bloozoo.
I'll print that out and give it a go at my LFS.

Cut the plug  :look: :-( ;) I wouldn't do that as it has on it MCT transformer.

houndour you can make the diffuser larger or smaller to meet your needs of your size tank.

1, is up to 125 ltrsl , 2, 250ltrs and so on up to 750ltrs and they give the extra diffuser parts. I really like it.

Someone said they use a shaver plug socket, so i may do that with it.

My PH is 7.

I'm looking forward to my riccia growing.
