I've given up on the idea of using loads of nice wood from a LFS to redecorate my tank. The amount I want will cost a small fortune and I'm not prepared to pay it.

Have any of you collected wood yourselves? How did you prepare it for tank use? Any specific trees I should be looking for (and something more specific than 'hardwood' as I'm clueless about which tress are).

pictures of the process and results would be great!

Uuum, I'm unsure about what is available to you but as for preparing the wood I scrubbed it (it was proper bog wood) poured a kettle of hot water over it and soaked it in a bucket and changed the water every day.
Maybe someone else would be able to help further on what wood would be available for you.

Beech and oak. As long as it is well dead and free from any bark it should be fine. A good scrub with hot water wouldn't hurt either. It will take a lot of holding down so ensure you have plenty of rocks to hand.
