Hey,

my platy has had 3 fry and i don't think ive seen any dead ones, all of yesterday she was swimming behind some weed and just flapping her fins not moving around at all, i thought it was just becasue she was pregnant, she looked fine. Then today shes getting a bit bothered by the other male platy i have, shes swimming around more now trying to get away from him, could this hurt her of the fry?

But I was reading another post and people were hinting the platy could die and now its making me worried, I don't have a trap and i can't go to the fish shop today... ... should i just leave it?

Also how many fry do platys have? Shes had 3 and im worried she can't get the others out?

Missy

You can also mail me...

If she still is fat she probably hasn't had them all yet, do you have a tupperware container or icecream box that you can float at the top of the tank for her.

Hey,

I just got a bit worried because my pregnant guppy swims around alot, and with my pregnant platy she sits in one place for around 5 minutes, all her fins fan out for a minute or so then go back into relaxed position... then she moves to the opposite end of the tank when my male platy bothers her... is this normal behavior?

Oh ok thats a good idea, but that wouldn't stop other fish from bothering her would it?

The chasing is normal. The mail just likes the scent she gives off from pregnancy hormones. SO pushing and shoving is normal. If he gets really aggressive with her, then it can be a problem. The babies will be fine with him chasing her. My male is chasing my pregnant female platy now, and she has a few overnight. Depending on how fat she is, she'll prolly have around 20 fry maybe. It all depends on how big she is though.

Yes, unless they jump into the container with her which has been known, but it will give her some peace and quiet.

yeh, hes not that bad, a gentle-man... hehe newayz,

yeh i might try the container I will see how she goes tonight and if no more fry are born by tomorrow morning i will put a container in.

Ive seen 3 fry for 2 days now and no new ones have been born :/

Well, they may have been born and eaten, you never know. It can take up to a week for her to give birth to all of them, just be patient.

Love_fish has pretty much covered it all, but there's a few things I want to add. :)

If the male starts getting really aggressive with the female, I'd suggest you seperate them. Too much stress on the female can cause her to abort fry, or have birthing troubles. Do you have a seperate tank, or just one? If you are going to get a breeder, get a breeder net not a trap. They have a bit more room. However, don't keep the mother in there for more then 3 days. That will greatly stress her out, which can lead to the things I mentioned above, and in extreme cases, death.

Platies can have anywhere up to 50ish fry, but around 5-20 is more normal.

And finally, she may still look pregnant, but she may have had all the fry she's going to have. They are constantly pregnant with new batches, so while they still are fat it doesn't always mean there will be more right now. As love_fish mentioned though, she can have them over the course of a week or so.

Best of luck!
