I bought a platy 2 weeks ago and she has become bigger and bigger. Today the males started following around quite relentlessly. I have put her in a separate net just now. What should I do? Obviously I have no idea how long until she gives birth so how long should I keep her in the net for? Is there a way to know roughly when she is due?! Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

5teady's pinned post is a good one for a platy pregnancy. He lays things out well and gives you lots of clues about what to look for in a livebearer to tell where she may be compared to her drop date.

I don't agree with him on his love of breeding traps but this is a hobby and breeding is an art. We each have our own methods for saving fry, along with most other things, and many of them work fine. I greatly prefer using a birthing tank where a female can relax and wait the last week or so for the drop to happen on its own. 5teady likes breeding traps so he must judge the state of his females much more accurately because they cannot be left in a trap very long. Each of us has success with our methods so there really is no right or wrong method.

i have a pregnant platy who is about to burst any day now. i dont recommend a breeder box or net bc it can be stressful. as long as the fry have plenty of places to hide they should be ok. natural selection will take its course as it does in nature.

You can let the platy give birht in the aquarium then fish the fry out the next day (thats what I did and I have 7 healthy fry about 2 months old). Keep then in a floating breeding box for 1 month then release them into the tank. Feed them crushed koi food.
