This is the first time since many months ago that I've been around to catch a fish ready to drop. I've had some of the other platies drop and only find out about it when I happen to see a single hiding fry in the roots of some of my plants. Inevitably, nature takes its course because I'm not going to try and rescue a fry and uproot my tank.

I thought today was a good day introducing a few pearl gouramis to the tank only to find my MM platy very solitary, rapid breathing, and at times seeming like she lacked the strength to do much else at all other than lay at the bottom of the tank in stiller water. So I watched her closely concerned she might be ill. She looked big in the belly but she always has been oddly shaped there so that was no immediate indicator. So with the new gouramis being introduced, the always fast harlequin and scissortail rasboras, and just the general choas of the tank today for some reason I decided to isolate my MM platy in a breeder box.

She was way too easy to catch first of all. I didn't even have to work to chase her. She simply let me net her with very little resistance. Once I had her in the box and she was closer to the light I was able to confirm she is indeed pregnant as I can see the bundle of fry and several eyes inside her.

So I was able to catch a few photos of her since she is moving slowly and thought I'd share for everyone to enjoy.

Sadly I must report that this post has gone from something I was excited about to a memorial. I came home after work just now and found her belly up. Judging by her opaqueness she likely died shortly after I left this morning for work. =(

All other fish are happy and fine so I think this was just her time. Perhaps pregnancy complications even...

you could have isolated her too early or she aborted and died.. sorry.

One day of isolation shouldn't kill a healthy fish, i've had them in a little floater for up to a week before for many reasons (birth, healing nipped fins, etc). So i assume it could have been issues caused by the pregnancy or something completely different and she just so happened to be pregnant at the time.

Maybe the stress from the other males chasing her on top of the stress of getting ready to give birth killed her. I usually take some time each day or so and watch all my fish. inspect their behaviors and bodies for anything unusual. Did you notice her acting funny prior to when you found her very lethargic yesterday? (not eating, hiding more, etc) The more you know the more things you can rule out.

The rapid breathing seems like an indicator to me. It's well known that females try to segregate themselves off when ready to drop but they shouldn't show any signs of stress such as rapid gill movement or listlessness.
Also to be honest in those pictures she doesn't look that far on, not ready to drop anyways.

Sorry for your loss, I doubt there was anything you could've done, but it does sound like she was showing some bad signs when you seperated her.

Yeah I doubt so too and my initial thoughts turned out to be right. I thought she might be ill based on her behavior and then realized she was pregnant. I had hoped that she was okay and just stressed. The isolation actually if anything seemed to calm her down breathing and all. The best thing I probably could have done for her was to separate her from the males. It just could have been her time to go too...considering the other fish are fine. Happens I guess =(

Hi,
As a new keeper of Platies, can u tell me how long it takes for them to give birth, as I have 1 now that has given birth, but didn't want to remove it from the Breeding tank before it had finished, as it still looks a bit on the fat (pregnant) side. Lastly how many babies do they normally have?
Thanks for your time

Platy births processes can take a few hours to complete Foxy. Have you looked at the posts that help you decide what stage your fish nay be at? I have my own favorite, my own personal post, but there are other pinned posts that may help you understand just what stage your fish has reached. Top reach my own thread on the subject, simply click the link in my signature that refers to my molly's full cycle. Other equally valid descriptions of judging your livebearer's pregnancy stage can be found at the top of this section of the forum.
