Hi, i was wondering if anyone could help, how long are guppies pregnant for?, its just that i thought it was about four weeks, but my guppies are pregnant, but half way through week six! tested the water ect everythings fine there, should i be worried?!

Are you 100% sure its a female? Check for the gravid spot on the back side of the fish..

It could just be a fat male.

also look at the anal fin. A female has a "fan shapped" fin, while the males have a "sword" looking fin.

**I'm new at this, so if you guys see somthing I was wrong about, don't double think about correcting me**

dont worry, mine do the same it seems longer than 6 weeks sometimes! mine seem to be pregnant for 2 months or so....it will just happen when you least expect it and when there 100% ready.Ive had tons of Guppys in the past and some of them will hold on right to the last min :D

cheers, well its the end of week six and stil no babies, they are really funny to see tho, they are almost completly round, like a little colourful ball!!!!!

They can sometimes hold on to the fry, if they are stressed out. What other fish do you have, and what size tank? I know you siad your water stats are fine, but what are they? Guppies can be sensitive, since they are so inbred.

Also, are you sure they aren't bloated, or have dropsy?

Just a quick thought, is there a lot of cover for her to give birth in? We found once our pregnant guppy had a big plant to go hide in, she popped out 20+ fry in less than 24 hours.

PS Anyone in Denver, CO want some free guppies? :)

hi, they are in a tank all on their own, PH around 6.9 - 7.0, my tests come back between 0 - 5mg/l for ammonnia, nitrate and nitrite, they are in a 2ft x 1ft tank and has some fake plants in and some retreats as well, week 7 and still no babies!!!!

hi, yeah there ar ea few fake plants and grasses for them to give birth in,

my female guppy gave birth many times and then once she never released the babies and she blew up really big and all her scales popped out. she was definately pregnant as you could see the babies inside of her self. so be careful

The guppy pregnancy lasts about 25-30 days

Check for a gonodonium or male genetals along wit a fan tail

My females, first time, have often held on for as long as 45 days.
They don't hold nearly that long with later broods. (one of mine had her 3rd brood in 22 days, her first brood was 44 days)
Also something to consider, they could be giving birth and they are being eaten.
Females can become pregnant immediately (even without a male in the tank) up to 6 times from one mating and sometimes dont get skinny in between. Some of mine do get thin after, some of mine don't and are immediately pregnant again.

Make sure you have plenty of cover if you want to save fry. 65% of the top cover is generally a good rule to follow as they will "go to the light". Also make sure there is lots of bottom cover for them to run to as well.

If you give her lots of places to rest and hide, have plenty of fry cover, increase the temp 2 degrees, do a 10% water change (this "Fakes" rain shower when they would normally deliver in the cleanest water) and often helps.

Good luck,
Kath

are they in any stress? is it in a breeder box? how long has in been in there (if shes in one). do you have another tank? water stats

sometimes a waterchange with very slightly cooler water can encourage a female to drop

no they are in a 2ft tank by themselfs ( there are three), no i really didnt like the idea of a breeder box, such a little space for them to swim in
