Hey guys im new to this site and I need a lil bit of help I bought 5 female pregnant guppies yesterday (18/10/12) 2 of them have been acting really wierd 1 has been hiding in the corner of the tank at the top and every time 1 of my guppies goes near her she chases them away and returns to the top of tank in the corner, yet her gravid oatch it all black she hasnt squared off, and my other pregnant guppy has a mainly pink gravid spot with some black in, yet the males keep trying to mate with her, and shes kinda boxed off... Can any 1 help me please???

The gravid spot isn't an exact method to judge how far along a female is, generally her over all size is used, and if she is close she will be squared off.

If you just bought them recently it is possible that the female in the corner just hasn't adjusted to her surroundings yet and has simple made a 'safe spot' for herself, where she feels she is safe. After a few days she should start to explore and become more comfortable. If she hasn't squared off yet than she isn't ready to drop quite yet.

As for the second guppy, as I previously stated, gravid spots aren't an exact method to judge. Male guppies will try and mate with any female guppy in the tank, whether she's pregnant or not it makes no difference to them. If she is starting to square off the chances are she will drop her fry in the next 12 hours or so.
If you want to keep the fry my suggestion is to allow her to give birth in the tank with all the other fish and merely net out any fry you find. If you put her in a breeding trap she will be stressed out and may cause injury to herself or her fry

How big is the tank?
What types and how many fish do you have in the tank?

I have two tanks 1 is a 96ltr and other is a 64ltr im using the 64ltr for new fish and a nursery tank for fry as I got that tank off my mother in-lawin the 64ltr tank has just light, filter, heater, stones and a breedin trap for fry that I manage to catch, in my main tank ive a mixture of live n fake plants, light, heater, filter, stones, bogwood and air pump with 1 platy, 1 cory and 8 guppies 2 females and 6 males.
In my other tank theres just the 10 guppies in 5 females and 5 males like I said there in that tank cause there new and j wonna make sure they havent got any diseases that they can pass to my others and I intend on keeping them there for a week or two.
My 2nd pregnant guppie that I mentioned keeps pooing alot and like I said the males keep trying it on with hervher gravid patch isnt like the other 4 females in the tank hers is more pink with abit of black in, and plus shes huge compared to my other pregnant 1's I dont intend on putting her in a breeding trap im just using the trap for the fry so they dont get eaten and they dnt end up in the filter.
Ive tried to upload a picture of the fat guppie but I canr seem to get my phone to do it

you might want to remove the males because they might stress the guppy out and she will just abort her babies... guppies are known to die after giving birth because they're so tiny.

Ok thanks, well my picture is the 1 im talking thats huge but shes more pink then black but shes squared off that why I posted on here to see if any 1 cud tell me or give me a clue to when she could have her fry

It is really hard to tell for sure when they will give birth. I have had some in the past square off, give up food, and hide. I think this is it. But no they hold off for another week. And then I have had some that barely look fat at all and have a bunch. They drop fry every 4 weeks. Give or take a few days each way. That is about all I can tell ya for sure.

She does look very pregnant but it is hard to tell, i have one that has been that size for weeks now (have put her in the breeder several times but still nothing) and i have had ones half the size that have given birth unexpectedly. It is hard to tell. I have one in the breeder now that has been quite big for a while but today i noticed a difference in her shape (a lot more boxed off and rounded, also the part where babys come out seems a bit bigger) so i'm hoping she will give birth tonight or tomorrow. Most of mine seem to give birth early in the morning or when i'm out, have not caught one giving birth yet.

Ok thanks ill just have to keep looking, I tried gor the first time yesterday and put her in my glosting breeding trap, she was ok wen I went to bed got up this n turned tank lights on n she just wasnt interested so I let her back out and shes been fine since

You can leave her in the trap for a couple days as long as she isn't stressed. est thing to do is let her give irth in the tank, as long as you have plenty of plants and hiding places you will proaly still have quite a few fry. I let most of mine give birth in the tank but have netted my blue guppy as i have people waiting to uy her fry (so want to save as many as i can), i saved 14 from my last guppy who gave birth in the tank and so far have saved 13 molly fry from yesterday (which i'm happy with).

well I put her back in trap today as all the others was stressing her out I just wish she would have them so I can leave her in the tank but she hasnt eaten anything today so im guesding shes either stressed from other fish or shes gonna av her fry

jus a quick note my guppie has had her fry at 12:00 managed to sa e 9 n she'd had another 3 wen I nipped home for sumat :-D

I was lucky I think, id just got backdrom pickin my lil girl up from nursery and shes akways lookin in the tanks n she happened to say look mummy fishy pooin so I did look n out it popped :-D
