Hi,

I've had my female Platty for 10weeks now. I thought that she looked pregnant when I got her and she is now enormous. Can anyone tell me how long the are normally pregnant for. Think I read somewhere that they get a black spot near the anal fin when it is near the time ( but could be wrong), spot been there for a few days. Any info would be good. :good:

Yeah guppies are absolute savages for food. But if you have a male guppy (do you?) I'd be very surprised if she's not preggers. If you've had her for 10 weeks and she's not dropped and there's no male present then it's time for WeightWatchers.

its a platy but anyway, try introducing them to some veg now and then. peas are great, just thaw them out, pop out of the shell and mush between your fingers, all my fish enjoy it and it prevents constipation which she may have, has she been going to the toilet? could also be bloat

Yes, I do have a male platy ( did have two females but one died a few weeks ago). She certainly looks pregnant but if not weightwatchers would definately be a good idea!

and you should get another female or 2 to avoid stress give the pea a try see if that reduces her size. have you noticed her going to the toilet at all?

Thanks, will feed some veg just in case it's constipation. Will also read up on bloat. Was hoping to have the patter of tiny feet!!

Yes, will get another female. Thought I might have babies and tank would get overcrowded. Not noticed her going to the toilet but possibly when I'm at work. Do you know anything about the spot that appears near the anal fin?

Most livebearing females are constantly pregnant. In the case of sword tails and platys though, Iv noticed that they don't drop all their fry at once. Its typically 1-3 a day spread out over quite a long period of time. She may be dropping fry on occasion that are being eaten, or perhaps just hiding.
