I'm completely naive when it comes to the details of amano shrimp. I've got 6 in my community tank. They all started out about 6 months ago quite small. Some have grown more than others and two of them are simply MASSIVE! Well, they both currently have a greenish substance on their bellies. I'm assuming they are eggs....?

As well as that the smaller shrimp often seem to be tending to them. Now I've done a tiny bit of research and from what I gather the eggs need to be moved to brackish water and once the shrimp hatch you gradually move them back to fresh water. Is this correct?

It's a liitle bit too much for me to breed them but I'm just very keen to understand the little fellas. Thanks in advance for any info you guys can give me.

The greyish green stuff on the belly are eggs.

Briefly speaking, the eggs hatch in freshwater and the larvae taken out and put into brackish-marine strength water until they develop into fully formed miniature shrimps. Then they can be put back into fresh water.

I have never tried breeding mine but there have been a couple of attempts by members of this forum some little while ago. Their threads make some interesting read. Here are also some websites on breeding too.

That's exactly how my little girls are looking. I'll have a read of the threads but considering the others that have tried this have a lot more experience than me it might be a step to far. But it won't hurt having ago.

I'm just imagining trying to capture dozens of tiny shrimp in my 120L tank.....
