Hi guys,

Just done a weekly water change, and at the bottom poking its big black eye and tiny body was a single fry lol

Can anyone help as I have two sailfin mollies that look pregnant, both of their bellies are very black and rounded, how do they give birth/how long does the birth last/do they just pop one out at a time, or do they have a blast and out come tons??

Hi there

Well when my mollys gave birth, it took a few hours before she was done, and she was dropping a few at a time, sometimes she dropped one, then all of a sudden 3 or 4 came out at one, was brilliant to see..!

As for how they give birth, well mine seemed to just be swimming about, then go to the bottom of the tank, have a wiggle and out popped a baby...lol.

Well they both have their moments, I had a panic the other day as all she was doing was sitting at the bottom breathing heavily! But now she sits and swims bit of a mixture. Its so weird I dont get them weird fish I have!!

Well apparently when they are ready to give birth, they seem to stay in one place, kinda hiding....and not swimming much at all...so that was maybe a sign? Fry can hide all over the place, so you may have some more hiding in your tank?

TBH I dont know, there isn't a male mollie in there not since he passed away but that was a month ago!

Well the females are able to store sperm for up to six months I think......gestation period is 28 days or there abouts...!
