I have a 55 gallon tank. my filter has to sit on the left side of the tank because of the hood style, should i get a power head or some other type of circulation device? idk if the right side of the tank is getting circulated well enough...

Have you considered an Eheim or Fluval External Filter?

A powerhead could work for now, but I'd agree - consider an external filter in the long term. IME, HOBs just don't perform up to par on long tanks. I did have good results running my 55 gallon with two HOBs, one at each end. Just one alone never seemed to cut it, even when the tank was slightly understocked.

Try eBay, people have gotten amazingly cheap used canister filters through there.
