well if u have read my previous topics i was deciding wheter or not i was goin to set up a nan well i have priced the tank and i ahve also got a power head adjustable flow for free and i ahve aslo found a stainless steel heater and i have found t5 light that are goin very cheap at my lfs so it a definite that i am setting up its just when i will get aroun to puting it all together i am thinking i have a live rock so will i still need a filter

While I myself am a complete newbie to marine I don't think a stainless steel heater is good in salt water....and if the tank has a good flow from the power head a filter isn't really hugely necessary... whats the tank size?? and will it be corals or without corals

for starters it wont have any corals and i meant to say just a heater i was talkin about somthing else andd i got my posts mixed up

Ohk well going by advice given to me you don't need a filter for nano tanks as long as you have a Pound to two pounds of Live Rock PER GALLON...and then have a powerhead which does around 8-12 times the tank's capacity each hour

Money and lots of it... I just today started my nano tank and spent $167.75 on salt, Live rock, substrate, Hydrometer and thats it so be aware the price is hefty and probably a good way to go about it is cycle the tank with live rock and while it cycles save up to buy more supplies and study... I saved money on a power head as I had a old mini filter which I took the medium out of and it does 320 Litres per hour so does roughly ten times my ten gallon... I will say that going for a FOWLR is a good option and also I wouldn't buy a protein skimmer yet even if they push you to buy it (this semi happened to me and I didn't have a spare $60) good luck :good:

Please Note: I am a complete newbie to marine aswell so Im pretty much in the same boat as you and being in Australia aswell be prepared for large price tags... and the live rock will be in Kilo's and not pounds so remember 1 Kilogram equals 2.20462262 pounds :D so for ten gallons about 6 Kgs of LR should be ok I got about 4 kg's ( 8.8 Pounds) for around $60-80 today

well my birthday is in three months snd i usually get about 150 -200 dollers so yeah i have already got a powerhead and i can a tank really cheap $50 for a 15 gallon also whats a hydrometre isnt the thing that measures ur salinity or watever it is

Yep the Hydrometer is the salinity thingy :) I got mine for $14.95 and it's a Rolf Hagen brand...it's just a floating one as I couldn't afford the digital variation

well actiually i was goin to buy $20 dollars of live rock over the weeks does thatsound alright

Going by the prices I paid that will get you about 1.1 Kilo...Looking at american LR purchasing threads they pay around $6-12 a pound so around $20 isn't to bad
