Ok so this might throw a spanner in the works for my 40gal shrimp tank. I currently have a fluval 404 and an eihim classic (forget which kind but it doesnt work great). Anyway in my wee tank I just cover the intake with a sponge and it works fine, I just rinse it when it gets clogged(usually with my weekly wc).

So with the power filters I rigged up a tubes with mesh system. I got syphon tubes and cut sections out of them then wrapped this flyscreen mesh round it and secured with pull ties. It seemed to work ok for the first few days then earlier today I noticed the fish (still have young sevs and stuff in there just now) were breathing a bit fast. I assumed it was the new bogwood leeching tannins or something so I did a partial wc. Upon doing this I find that both filters had almost stopped functioning. The mesh must have totally clogged over just a few days. can anyone suggest an alternative solution as I dont want to be cleaning filters every few days and I dont want to risk losing my sensitive(and expensive)shimp.

Thanks

i just stuck the filters into the ends of tights..... :good:

doesnt seem to restrict the flow at all

Screen, stocking, or tights clogs when wrapped tight. You can either balloon it out, leaving clearance between it and the intake, or use sponge. I always used sponge on the filter intakes in fry tanks, screen & such is a pain with clogging.

Yeh I find spong clogs pretty quick too though.

my tights still havnt clogged after a month. :p

if anything, the current is too strong!

It could also depend on the type of sponge you are using. I used a coarse open cell sponge, if you are using closed cell it will plug easier as will sponge with more fine pores.

For screen I used fiberglass window screen. As far as tights go, one of the wife's worn out footies was used. These both plugged before the sponge.
