Want your reviews and suggestions for power filters. I'm looking to replace five Aquaclears by the end of the year.

I have the Penguin 100 power filter. Its not noisy if u fill up the tank well from the water falling too high. Some people have problems with the spinning wheel, sometimes it wont spin , but i never had that problemo so far.

My friend has an entire breeding setup with Penguin 330's on breeder 150 liters and he loves them. Why does he love them? Their price point. You can get them for US$20 each online and they run on 9 watts of electricity (nothing). For multiple tanks, they rock. He was especially glad he did individual filtration on his tanks when one tank got popeye. Just think if he had a central wet/dry hooked up. All these Penguins have done is save him money.

And there is the emperor 280 power filter, some will say this filter is the best. With some Penguins you may run into some problems with the nois. I also found that the three stage filtration system runs great. You have the freedom of being able to customize your filter media. Keep in mind that this filter costs a little bit more than the average filter, but its performance will prove to be well worth the money spent! This filter is an excellent power filter and even beats a few canister filters with its flow rate, compact size and BIO-wheels. Just change the media/cartridges monthly and you'll get crystal-clear water for the rest of that tank's life!

Why do you want to replace the ACs?

I have 20 running AC filters running from 2-6 years, 1 Emp 400 running 6+years, 2 whisper Jr (really dont like them), 2 HOT Magnums running several years. I had a tetratec I ran for about 15 hours before getting rid of it.

One's choice of filter should be applicatio0n specific imo.

The Aquaclears are noisy and unreliable for me. They can never seem to go one week without stopping and turning useless, a real risk whenever I decide to take a vacation. It might just be my batch, but I'm not going to risk getting another Aquaclear.

Hi dizzied :)

I just came to the Hardware section to post the same question.

In my case it's not the fault of the AquaClears, which are good filters, but a problem with my electric supplier, LIPA. Whenever the power dips, even for a moment, some of them will lose their prime and continue running without water. I have to replace one today because this must have happened again during the night. I now have a pile of dead AquaClear filters in my fishroom.

I have switched all my smaller tanks to the old air pump and box filters, but need to find a reliable alternative for the 55 gallon tanks.
