So I got a call from my grandma today, she had herd that I was beginning to get back into fish keeping and asked me if I'd like to have my grandpas old tanks. I can't remember the sizes of the tanks but I remember them as a kid being quite large ( of coarse that could just be because I was a kid and thought they were big ) . My grandpa used these tanks to temporarily house his gold fish over winter and when spring came they would go back into their huge pond. I believe these are 20gal tanks and she said there are two of them with filters and heaters so they are ready to plug in and go ( I will be cycling them of course )

Now I'm left with having to figure out what I want to stock.. One will be used for my crayfish as I feel 10gal is not enough for him. So that will leave me with a 10gal and a 20gal tank that need to be stocked although I may use the 10gal as my quarantine tank as I still don't have one.

What are your thoughts?

I think that the 10 Gal would be great for a QT as it saves you from having to get another one.
For the 20 Gal you could set it up as a subtropical tank which are often really cool as there is actually a large range of fish that are ideal and most are really colourful. This is just what I would personally do but its up to you.

What do you have currently set up?

I agree, the 10 gallon would be an ideal QT for you.

You could go for a small tetra and betta tank.

I personally (if you were having it subtropical) would have a male paradise fish and a nice school of pearl danio's or mountain minnows or even both. There are lots of different options though. :)

Hehehe go with young Cichlids

I currently have a 65 gal with 5 cichlids and a 10 gal with a blue crayfish. One of the new 20gal would go to the cray so that would leave one 20gal and one 10gal. And I believe I will use my 10gal as my quarantine. One other thing I was thinking is I want to try and breed some sort of fish, I don't care what it is I just want to do it as a learning experience.

@ blondielovesfish

I will have to do some research on the paradise fish and mountain minnows as I have never even herd of them before. So let the research commence.

:) It's always good to learn about more fish. I bet you will fall in love with the paradise as they are beautiful fish. The mountains are nice fish although they are quite small.

@ smexxynick

I was thinking that as well because I would like to get more kenyi and try breeding them but right now I'm just keeping my options open.

@ blondielovesfish

Yea those paradise fish are awesome looking! Not to fond of the mountain minnows as I like colourful/flashy fish and they just seem a little too plain for me.

Loving the ideas guys keep them coming :D

Yeah, I thought that might be the case with the mountains. There are loads of other subtropical fish out there though. :)
Another fish that I read are nice for subtropical tanks is the freshwater sunfish. I'm not quite sure of their requirements or their adult size but apparently they are good fish.
Have a good read of this and see what you think:

There is many more species of subtropical fish if you do like the idea of them although it is completely up to you. :)

Livebearers will breed no matter what you do.  But they will require alot of tank space (and more tanks) as your breeding project gets larger and larger.

You could try and breed angels too.  I've never done it, but from what I've seen, it looks fun.  Someone please tell me if 20 gallons is too small to have a pair of angels breed in!  I really don't know what I'm talking about when it comes to angels.  Just throwing ideas out there. :)

Hmm I don't think these type of fish will work very well for me. Right now I'm no longer running a heater on either of my tanks because they are heating up to 78 deg because of how warm it is. So tropical fish may be a better choice for me. That was a good read though.

@NeonBlueLeon

I was actually thinking of angel fish as well and was hoping someone with them would chime in because my LFS is packed with some beautiful angels, but like you I have no idea on what size of tank they need. And acquiring tanks is not an issue for me as I can buy used tank locally for 20-40$ with all accessories

Okay thats fine. It was just an idea and it is always better to expand your knowledge and you never know, one day you may want to set up a subtropical tank so it is a good thing to have knowledge of. :)

You could always try your hand at a planted tank. If you did go planted then you could just have some basic tetras like Cardinals or Neons (though lots of people advise against Neon's because of how badly they have been inbred).
Just throwing ideas out there. :)

Yea that's fine blondie I like the ideas it gives me something to consider.

I don't think I'm going to get more tetra not yet anyway because all they sell locally are black skirt and they aren't exactly an exciting fish plus I just got rid of 12 of them haha

Congrats on the new tank supra! My grandma only ever gave me shoes. ;)
Angels need about 30 gallon as a minimum. I agree that the 10 should be a quarantine. A betta tank would be nice too :) .
The 20 gallon would be good for a paradise fish and some sort of danio. I think you should do a tropical community cos you are keeping cichlids and community and cichlids are completely different!
