Possible Water Emergency?

Do all plecs need bog/drift wood? Xx

Not sure what country you're in but if u are waiting a while for your test kit your local fish shop should test the water for you for free.
I'm in uk and all my local ones do it xxx

Yes all plecs need it, its part of their basic diet.

And my lfs charges you for tests, but if OP can get to a fish shop to test water, they can buy a kit :)

Whenever you have the LFS test your water, be sure they write down the test results. Best to actually see the test results yourself and write them down.

I was just reading your other thread about algae, you said your replaced the filter pads,is this the same tank??

This could be the cause of your fish gasping at the surface, has recommended do a minimum daily w/c of 50% or more until your test kit arrives.

Changing the filter pad instead of swishing it in used tank water, you have gone into a fish in cycle, and you will need to do these w/c's to keep your fish alive.

Good luck. :good:

That was in a separate tank, thank the lord! Because plecs are my favourite and I wouldn't want them in algae crap :)

But with the algae infested tank, I should do larger water changes? the fish in that tank seem fine despite the constant growth of algae.. I changed the filter pad twice in 1 week, the second time being a few days ago and it's already growing algae again :\ I seriously think it's the tank design.. so gross.

Hey hanny93,
We talked about my tank being overstocked... well I saw a tank today that I really liked that was 165L.. so with the shark, and goldfish already going, would that be suitable for the fish I currently have in this tank?

It may be the fact you changed your filter pad which is the problem. with filter pads the older the better. once tank has been cycled it has lots of happy friendly bacteria which sort out the levels of ammonia,nitrate/rite. i have had my tank running for a year and a half and have only changed one filter pad once (i have 4 filter pads). the best thing to do is during a water change just squeeze it out in the drained water xxx

How much driftwood does one 4cm plec need?

Are you in uk hanny93?

Not sure really, id say at least the length of the plec, and yes i am, why?

oh my god! i put some drift wood in the tank last nt that i had from an old setup. woke up this morning and my pleco was playing in it! he's been so depressed lately after the syno incident that he never left his coconut house. Ever! i even turned the light on this morning and he continued to play in the wood, was swiming about and sucking the glass. thankyou so much for telling me about the wood!!!!! was so worried about my little captain jack!

i only ask about being in the uk in regards for you having to pay your lfs for water tests. thought it might be a usa thing. i live in northeast and all 3 of my "pets at home" stores will test my water for free (as long as you don't go in every day). i have a kit now but it was great help when i was having nitrite problems x

Haha see told you :)

And my lfs wont, charges £3 for a full test..

that's evil!!

yea captain jack is sooo much happier, he's gone back to bed now but hopefully he'll be up for a nice algae wafer later on tnt. i am so soppy when it come to him. just found out he is an l015, although i don't know if it's he or not. ( how can you tell??)

says this on planet catfish
Males develop small teeth-like odontodes which adorn the leading pectoral fin rays and the back half of the fishes body. Females remain unadorned and have a wider girth across the body most evident when the area just behind the pectoral fins is viewed from above.

but i'm not sure what the first sentence means
