Hi

Just a bit of advice please, community tank running lovely apart from the followng. Fish sometimes flick and have done for months but put it down to the fact we all itch now and again! But now I am wondering if parasites are to blame, have not lost a fish since setting up in january/february and fish all growing quickly and feeding. Have young guppies who also flick now and again. The reason I am wondering about parasites now is that the female guppy has the start of fin rot and has not really been as active as normal for the last two weeks so treating her myxazin for the fin rot/bacterial infection. Could this be the result of parasites in the first place weakening female guppy?

All other fish appear healthy and feed well, no excessive gill movements only the odd flick from fish. Water conditions are spot on but ph is around 6.6 which i think maybe a bit soft for guppies but cardinals love it.

Any thoughts please?

added this after testing too :good:

thanks, already think there is a possibility of it being Gyrodactylus but want to make sure rather than over reacting and dumping medicine in. No fish lost at moment so does it need treating if there is a problem?

It could be skin flukes.

Hi Wilder,

Think Mrs Guppy is on her last fins, not eating tonight and having trouble maintaining balance :(
Tonight will be make or break......I know guppies are not supposed to be the strongest of fish when i comes to fighting disease due to being so farm bred.

No they are not thats why i gave up on them, every time i bought them they died, though never was able to get them in good shape in the first place.
She has a bacterial infection, she's not going to make it your'e right.
Are the fish flicking alot as it could be skin flukes as you won't be able to see them with the naked eye.
Plus flukes do alot of damage to the fish, causing bacterial infections on top.

Scroll down to flukes.

I have shrimps, what would you recommend for parasites to treat?
They flick but not excessively. should they flick at all?

Interpet don't seem to do one for flukes, you can use methylene blue, but not sure if you can use it with strimps. I would ask the lfs.

Try that for now, but tonics are not strong meds, it might do the job.

Pm wolf he knows his meds, plus he works at an lfs.
