ok i had to do my weekly water change today on my 32l tank, the tank contains

1x betta around 1 and a half inch in size

3x neons

1 x albino catfish*

pretty planted and using a pf1 filter,

anyway i decided to clean out the filter aswell as its been over a month since it has been maintained properly, anyhow little did i know that when i unpluged the filter what was to happen next....the filter let out loads of crap! all into my water......anyway i carryed on as normal placed the filter back in after cleaning and added the new clean water....now i decided to watch the tank to see if anything was wrong as there was bits of crap floating about everywhere :( anyway i noticed that 1 neon "flicked" itself on a plant leaf......he only did it once and i sat there for a good 15mins watching the tank and he never did it again, should i be worried? should i treat the water, do a large water change? someone please advice asap :(

*i dont know what it is but i know its albino something, he is white and looks like a common catfish..

no i wouldn't say it's anything to worry about, just keep an eye on it.

A little bit of advice about taking the filter out, i find that by placing a net underneith the filter before you turn it off and pull it out, it catches the crap and solves the problem.

Also i'd be worried about keeping neon's with the male fighter, neons can be a bit nippy.

hope that helps.

Don't mean to sound patronising or anything but did you use a dechlorinator in your water, if not that could be the problem.

thanks for the replys, yes i do treat the water first, the betta and neons seem fine together, no nipping as the neons dont dare go near my betta lol they all seem fine, i havent noticed anymore flicking and the filter seems to have cleaned most of the tank out

lol, I'm lucky I have an external filter so most of the crap ends up over the floor when I miss the bucket, thought my mollies were flicking and rubbing, looked closer and they were ripping the algae off the log.
