Hello folks - I noticed this AM that my Betta (community tank w/danios & snail) has some small white spots on it's fins and a few on it's body. The other fish appear to be fine. He's not covered in them head to fin BTW.

I've had very few problems in the past with ich/ick so I'm not as familiar with it as I'm sure some here are.

Questions: Should I start treatment now or observe further? I have Maracide on hand. Will this harm or kill my snail? Can snails get/carry this disease?

Info: Water conditions are fine, temp is at 80 degrees, fish are eating and active. I do add salt to my aquarium (about 1 teaspoon per 5 gallons of water).

The instructions for using Maracide state "use 2 capfuls (10 mL) per 10 gallons of water." Only problem is, the bottle has a squirt type top. Any ideas how I can measure this out properly without having to go out to a medical supply house?

Thanks in advance

You will have to remove the snail, turn temp up to 30, and add extra aeration, maybe a bit of salt one teaspoon to 5gals.

Found some info on the Net which recommends 1 drop of Maracide per 1 gallon. Sound right?

Dont be an idiot like me and prolong the heat for too long. Columnaris may come in after, and you dont want to have to do deal with that.

Anyway, I would start treatment right away. Wilder pretty much covered it, add some salt, raise temp, add aeration. Then start medication.

Good luck.

If you can get it, use Cupramine [and you will need a copper test to keep copper level at correct level} The danios prolly wont get it, those things could survive a nuclear bomb but the snail couldnt get it, and even if it could, it would need to be removed if the treatment includes copper, which works the best as far as ich treatments go.

Thanks all - I'm only upping the temp to 82 degrees (Maracide recommends you leave temp, ph, etc... alone when using) and there's already salt and an airstone in there. Maybe I'll add a bit more salt though - I'm reading that 1 teaspoon per gallon isn't too much. Currently, I have around 1.5 teaspoons in the entire tank - Tank is 6.6 US gallons.
