Hi guys,

I have just got back into fish keeping currently running a freshwater tank but it's always been a dream of mine to own a porcupine puffer, how big a tank would be required and what sort of tank mates could I keep with him/her? And whats the minimum tank size?

And any general advice to a complete newbie like a guide and essential equipment etc would be great.

Thanks!

Porcupine Puffers grow to about 12" so i would look at a 60x24x24 tank not invert or coral friendly so either a FOWLER or FO dependant on method and expense a big skimmer as these are messy fish.

I would be tempted to go for a FOWLR with most the LR in a Sump and some nice white Coral Bones in the DT lighting I would go for 2 or 4 T5 most prob 4 to get some nice colour options

Then look at tank mates like Butterflies and Panther Groupers etc.

Thanks for the advice, I will probably do that in the future when I have more money lol.

I may convert my 125l (in a few years) into a marine tank, what sort of reef friendly fish could I get?

Sorry to be a complete n00b I would love some different anemone as well.

thanks

Anenomes should be avoided until the tank is very mature I would say at least 9 months I would start your reaserch now as the anenome will determine your light set up as some have very high light demands here is a list of nems usually available in the UK market

Bubble Tip nem Difficult to keep but generally the best starter nem
Carpet Nem extremely difficult to keep
Malu Anenomes Difficult to keep

Anenonmes to avpoid

Aiptasisa this is a pest in a marine tank
Bedlet these are collected from the shores of europe and are generally not suitable for a marine aquarium unless you are doing a cooler water tank
Majano Also a pest anenome

Fish in a 125L

Clowns
Firefish
Hawkfish (With Caution)
Dward Angels
Gobies
Blennies
Dottybacks (With Caution)
Damsels (With Caution)

I am sure I have missed some but its a starting point

Thanks for your help!

I'd definitely want two clowns, a gobby and prehaps a dwarf angel? I'm also interested in dwarf fuzzy lionfish do you have any advice on these? How many fish of say clown fish/gobby size could I have in a 125l tank?

Could I get any starfish or is there some to avoid.

Sorry for so many questions i'm such a n00b at marine.

Thanks!

Starfish+puffer = puffer food, puffers will eat all and any inverts you have.

Lionfish should only be kept with fish bigger then their mouths.
You could probably get 4-5 small fish in 125 if you keep up water changes.

Would a fuzzy dwarf lionfish fit in the 125 litre? Thanks for the help guys, i'm just researching at the moment. I'm gonna wait a few years until I get another tank or convert my freshwater one over.

Stumbled upon a washed up porcupine puffer the other day on the beach. Bigger than my foot.
