hey guys. i went to sign up but apparently im allready a member lol. anyways... tonight i got my snakehead back which i sold a while back.. its about 1.5 ft but not sure what sort of snake it is. i will post some pictures when i find my camera lead. I am going to be building a heated pond for it in the garden ( heated becuase im in the uk). i was wondering if any body on here has built a pond for a snakehead in britain, so i can get an idea on equipment im going to need and pond size etc. any advice would be great. thankyou

wow, this will be interesting, looking forward to watching you doing this

A heated outdoor pond here in the u.k, um think your electric bill esp in winter will be astanomical, i would advise building a pond then housing it either in a shed or a summerhouse, seriously i think not a good idea, maybe i could be wrong!
also if you do go ahead make it so that the snakehead cannot escape as they will, so either having it raised alot higher than the ground or some type of good covering, cant wait to see the pictures....try doing something like our http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/topic/318731-1000-us-gal-project/
doesnt have to be as exspensive :good:

Neils right about the heating bill as my pond gets freezing in winter!!

I kept Channa Pulchra and Asciata last summer in my pond. Initially I had a problem with them jumping out even though its a raised pond and the lip is 12 inches or so from water surface

never saw them except maybe for a moment in a real sunny spot but when I caught them, to take them out they had grown loads and had obviously been feeding well!

I searched the pond thoroughly and never caught all the asciata and few weeks ionto winter an asciata floated to the surface dead so the winter colds far too cold

indoor ponds got to be the way to go but I;d get a side glass as I doubt you;d get real benefit from seeing a channa at the surface... at the end of the day they are dark on top light on bottom usually

you'd have to have some powerful heater to heat an outdoor pond sufficient enough to keep a snakehead through the winter, im sure the electric bill would cost the same as building a shed/greenhouse round the pond!

yeah maybe your all right. heating will cost a bomb. the only reason im wanting to build a pond for it is because my tank is right next to my bed lol. and the thing will be jumping around waking me up at 5 every morning!. Also to give the fish alot more room live in.

As for the fish jumping out of the pond. i was planning to have a vented clear plastic top on the pond. I will proberlly go for the shed option. Really not sure what im doing though lol. I have been watching videos on youtube of people building ponds and have a friend that works at the LFS so get everything at a good price.

Does anybody have a link to a thread on how to go about building a pond in a shed??

thanx for your replys guys!!

Might scrap the shed idea and clear the garage out and have one in there. will see how things go.. would be alot safer from thieves that way aswell!

or might just get a big pond plastic base and put a lid on it lol

If you are using your garage then theres a few options,

find as said a plastic pre moulded pond, and place with something like concrete and those large airbricks, then build around with some nice wood..

or just find a nice large "holding breeding tank like they have in pet shops where they keep coldwater fish and larger garden fishes...

Also i saw recently a large 8-4-4foot green plastic breeding holding tank with built in filter and pumps,it was on ebay for offers over 100pounds, see if i can find link to give an idea, or you could build a tank in the garage, best bet in my oppinion, like some of our members...

much appreciated mate!!!! will have a look though now. all looks rather exspensive lol. I read one of them threads and a bloke said it only cost him about 100 pound to build the tank. so i might consider going down that route.

lmao at the second video.. times arent that bad at the moment haha..

i wonder how much that last link cost all together. somthing like that would be amazing but im on about a 4-500 pound budget at the moment!

Thankyou Nelly for looking around for me. im probally going to go with a build. unless i can pick up a 7 ft tank somewhere. becuase i dont want a tank with just the snake in. id like to have a large Aro in there aswell.
