i have heard and seen people put polystyrene between the tank and the stand so there is no preasure points between the tank and the stand.

my house is old and i know that the floor isnt perfectly stright but not far off stright.

do you think it is worth puting polystyrene under my 6x2x2 ft tank?

Also does anyone else do this?

Dan

We used a camping roll mat for a couple of our tanks. Our first tank was put on a built in shelf and it was a little uneven so we used the roll mat and it's been fine. :good:

so you think its worth doing

on a tank that size and weight i would definitely put polystyrene under it :)

thanks everyone
how much are they and were can i get?
also who uses them?

your lfs should sell them or get polystyrene ceiling tiles from any DIY shop, they're pretty cheap

oh forgot to ask in the 1st post, how thick shall i get the polystyrene sheets? 1''? 1/2''?

Just to play devils advocate here.

Some tanks are designed NOT to have stuff under them. I know my 5 foot Rena tank doesn't have anything under it as it designed that way ie the glass base does not touch the surface of the stand. The same with my smaller 18 inch tank.

I think you are advised to place polystyrene under tanks that have glass bottoms that touch the surface they sit on to stop pressure points cracking them.

As you said though check with your local LFS, if anything like mine they are happy to give advice.

thanks for this
can anyone have a second opinon on this just to confirm thanks

I think if the tank comes with a stand then it may not be such a problem. Three of our tanks are on units so we used the roll mats.
If you have a problem finding polystyrene tiles the you can get a roll mat from any camping shop. Ours only cost about £4.99. :good:

yeah tanks like juwel's, rena's etc have what's called a floating base and don't require polystyrene or anything else inbetween, check the manufacturers instructions. but for a regular glass aquarium (especially a 6'x2'x2') you should have something between the glass and the stand, doesn't have to be polysytrene it's just what's normally used as it's cheap and easy to get hold of.
